540i Rough Idle

My 2001 540i with 130K miles has a very uneven/rough idle when cold.
Seems to be getting worse and now even when it is warm, the idle is rough and not what it was 6 months ago.

The idle speed on the car is now down to about 590 RPM when warm. (What is the spec?).

I've changed plugs recently - O2 and MAF replaced 3 years ago.

I'm thinking it needs new intake manifold gaskets, but wanted to see if it could be something else before tackling this job.
Could the CCV cause this problem? (Car is not burning oil, no smoke, no codes stored).

Thanks!

Is the SES (CEL) light on?
Your warm idle should be 500 RPM with AC off, 700 with it on.

Thanks JimLev - No CEL or codes stored.
It is a 540 6spd so not sure the specification for idle speed is any different compared to an Auto.

As mentioned, it is very rough and almost sounds like it is misfiring when first warming up in cold weather. It did this last year too and at the time, thought it was intake manifold gaskets.

But, now seems to also not idle perfectly when warm, so was looking for suggestions of what this might be.

Have you checked for pending codes using a code reader?

That was the first thing I checked.
No Check Engine Light and no Codes stored.

When I had a rough idle that appeared after working on the car, it turned out to be hose#27 not sitting properly on the intake resonator, ever so slightly.

Checked all over for vacuum leaks and got codes for ICV, cleaned the ICV several times and still rough idle when cold. Was about to replace the ICV. That is, until I noticed the hose not sitting exactly on the resonator. Twisted the hose firmly in place and the idle went back to normal.

I realize you have a m62TU engine, but suggest you double check vacuum hoses and intake hoses again.

Thanks - This has been degrading over the last year or so and also is much worse when cold - so based on the continued downward spiral, doesn't seem like it would be a hose.
Will check..

Any thoughts on either CCV or air leak around fuel injectors?

Are there any other symptoms such as low RPM hesitation or studdering under 2000 rpm?

No other symptoms.
Runs perfect off idle.
Lots of power, accelerates smoothly.

Agree on probable air leak - dont think it's coil packs because it runs fine off idle or during hard acceleration.

That #27 hose dvsgene mentioned is not on the M62TU 540i. The intake muffler is actually plastic welded onto the intake hose.

Make sure your intake hose clamps are tight.
