tire and wheel insurance

BMW Open Road in Morristown claims that one cannot buy the tire and wheel protection after the delivery of the car. Hence, you need to purchase it at the time of the purchase of the car.

Thoughts?

My dealership said I had 30 days. I bought it within a week, actually never even went back in, just gave them my credit card number, they sent me the forms, I faxed them back. Given the cost of these tires and the potential cost of RIM repair, I thought it was well worth it. I went for 48 months if I recall correctly.

I was told I could not purchase the insurance after I took delivery of the car...so I took it.

I keep reading about the tire BMW insurance on this forum. Just wonder how many of us indeed buy the insurance at delivery ? As far as my own experience, between my sedans and wife's X5 last 12 years i had to change only one tire.

Hello all,

This question will depend on what "brand" tire and wheel insurance you are purchasing. Not all of these have the same coverage / exclusions / etc. Most (like ours currently), are not available after the initial purchase. I hope this helps! --Mike

I bought it on delivery. I figured it'd be worth it, and I'm glad I did. Already went through 2 tires after 2 months

It would be helpful to understand what everyone paid for a BMW branded wheel and tire insurance for the F10. Not sure if sport package adds to the cost? When dealers were selling non bmw insurance (EasyCare, Fidelity, etc.) pricing varied significantly.

How do you tell if a wheel is bad without seeing a dent in the rim?

When the steering wheel wobbles in your hand.

BMW have 'invented' a nice side business selling fear (and sh*tty LS2 tires). My dealer tried to wrestle $1500 out of my hand at delivery. An unsavory experience.

We've owned 5 BMW's.. When my lease is up on my X5M, I'm not likely to own a 6th.

In Canada I was quoted $1,360 for 2 years, $1,510 for 3 years, $1,740 for 4 years and $2,160 for 5 years.

I don't know if the coverage is the same though.

My car delivery was May 28, 2011. I paid $1374 for 3 years of coverage at the time of delivery.

Can "delivery" be interpreted as "re-delivery" for European Delivery cars?

do yourself a big favor and dont buy any car from morristown n.j.. i made that mistake and now i am regretting it and will be taking them to court. and you dont need the insurance because goodyear backs up the runflats from road hazzard. i had my 2012 550 msport xdrive one month and got a bubble in tire. goodyear replaced all 4 tires with my choice of continental dws and i am now happy with the tires. morristown has given me a hard time for the last 2 months trying to get back my $1350 road hazzard insurance i paid and want refunded. they also took a $300 deposit for motor vehicle registration fee,,, my reg came out to $40 morristown refunded me only $160.. morristown shorted me $100 for some other undisclosed clerical fees. they also charged $100 prep fee and $400 doc fees. i will never buy a car from morristown again

Frustrating that dealers are charging all these fees. Open Road (Morristown and elsewhere) is not alone but some are much better.

I'd say if you have 18" rims pass, if you have 19" rims buy it.

I have the 18" rims with Continental ContiProContact SSR and after 5700 miles on NYC streets I've had no bubbles or bent rims.

Helpful hint: Bimmerfest has a really effective "Search" feature. By using it, you can see thirty or more threads on this topic, with thousands of responses. That way you will get a ton of real world input on which to base your decision.

When you start YET ANOTHER thread on this tired, old topic, you will only get responses from other folks who are new here, and you will miss out on the collected wisdom and experience of the Bimmerfest family.

I don't really see the point. The LS2 tire comes with a great warranty from the manufacturer.

Most of us have strong enough balance sheets that a tire/rim incident won't break us. Actuarially we must be better off self-insuring.

I paid $575 for a three year warranty from a third party. I was not that concerned about the warranty since I have the 18's.

Just posted this on another thread, but figured I'd share here too. I created a simple calculator to help with this decision. Bottom line, it depends on how much the tire costs and how likely you think you are to get a flat:

fwiw, i was offered 2500 for bmw insurance (now $50 deductible per occurance), and 1997 for third party insurance (zero deductible) each for 5 years. I went with third party cuz NYC roads are awful. Also, manhattan bmw offers tire insurance at any time even if you didnt buy the car from them, its 995 for 5 years, and 895 for 4 year, no deductible, however there is a $3k cap lifetime of the policy, and they pay 90% of the each occurance. They dont require you to bring in the car to inspect the tires, however they do not allow claims within the first 40 days of the policy to offset that.

useful spreadsheet, thanks

This spreadsheet only accounts for tires, the coverage also covers rims. If you have to replace 1 rim your break-even point comes a lot quicker than 7 tires.
