Question Z3 Noise from rear end

I have a 97 Z3 2.8. Have s slight knocking/thumping coming from the rear-end of the car. Most noticable when the car is cold and/or driving slowly. Went to local garage for BMW and they said it was the tires coming apart (62,000 miles on the tires). Got new tires but the noise is still there, slightly louder. Car has 119,000 miles. Have had all regular maintenance done on it. Could this be transmission? Something else? Any suggestions?

Sounds like the upper shock mounts are shot. It's a common Z3 problem and easy to fix. Try searching the forum for DIY instructions.

I hear noises from my rear end, but usually it is a hiss or creaky floor boards sound!

I had the same issue on my 2.8 Z3 after lowering. More lateral stresses on shock mounts. There are heavier duty versions available if needed.

My BMW guy replaced the shock mounts and the right rear shock (it was cracked). fixed the problem. cost $400. thank you especially to A8540TDI. You were right on. No more noise. I am most grateful.
