windshield replacement cost?

All,
My windshield is really pitted. Probably the majority of people would not notice it but I do. Anyone know how much to replace? It has the rain sensor. Thanks.

Depends.

OEM glass is about twice the cost of generic stuff. I'd estimate about $1500-$2000 including labor. Just had my X5 done and it was about $2200 (12in long crack). Insurance covered it (less deductible) but I had to fight with them to use the dealer/OEM glass. They tried to fob me off onto Safelite. I don't have "15 minute" insurance, they approved it for an OEM replacement.

I just had mine done at the dealer - $1450. You can get it done by a windshield shop for about half.

$1400+? For a New Windshield?

Uh - no! OEM perfectly installed with new liner and all <$700. Sounds like you're paying a dealer premium instead of going directly to the glass shop.

Quoted $400

I just bought my 2006 325i at a lien sale this past Monday. It had a chip with a very small 1/4" crack near the roofline of the drivers side. I took it in today to the corner auto glass guy to see if he could seal it but he said no. He told me to drive down the street and have SafeLite seal the crack. Before I left, I asked the replacement cost and he said it would be $400 with the rain sensor.

SafeLite charged me $40 to seal the crack with insurance discount. Otherwise it would have been $150.

If you only have pits and no cracks, go to a place and have them filled. If they are good, you probably won't even be able to notice them when they are done. Ask your service advisor who they use.

do any of you guys have Comprehensive + Glass coverage on your insurance? Basically a glass rider on your insurance so that if it gets cracked insurance replaces it for free?

I know people that have this, but I have had trouble getting it through my insurance. I ended up having to just put my comprehensive deductible at 0 to get a comparable deal.

I have State Farm...

windshield replacement cost?

It's covered by insurance in Florida. Once a year I think...lucky in one way other way unlucky with high rate insurance. Ask your insurance company they might cover it. Worth a try...good luck!

Unless you don't have a windshield insurance from the dealer, Your Car insurance is a good idea to fall back to
They cannot deny to cover the windshield as is a safety concern!

This should be done at a BMW dealer. Dealers need the revenue as its late season to put in the new pool.

$400 in my driveway using Pilkington glass by a local indy on our 330i and then our 328i.

Dealer has to find another pigeon.

Just because its covered, doesnt mean it makes sense. If you have a $500 deductible, and safelite charges <$500 for BMW glass, you still paying out of pocket.

I had safelite do my windshield with proper bmw glass for $450 or so.

Note - BMW value-engineered the shade strip at the top of the windshield in 2010 (?). If you have a newer model, ask for the earlier glass.

My 2009 doesn't have the strip either. Can I replace it with an even earlier windshield? I'm assuming there were no changes in the actual shape?

Quote I got from Safelite - this is w/rain sensor windshield. (gray strip, does not come with the added solar protection)

$408.95 + $31.43 (NJ taxes) + $29.95 mobile fee + $9.95 (disposal fee) = $480.28 (total).

I just got my windshield replaced a couple of weeks back. I got the BMW OEM one installed and I went through Safelite because I have the windshield insurance! I only paid $100 deductible but the total cost, including labor was close to $1,000 USD (The insurance paid the remaining ~$900).

Also, I noticed a few things that you need to be careful and check by yourself after the installation. When the new windshield is installed, make sure that you don't see any primer over spray over the dot-matrix on the sides of the windshield. You can notice this when you sit inside and look at the dot-matrix all around the left, top and right side. If you see over spray that just means they didn't do a clean job, however functionally the windshield should still be good! Also, make sure they re-install the wiper arms back correctly. Safelite had messed up my wiper arms and I had to open up my front-hood and readjust them. It will also be a good idea to install new wiper blades after the windshield installation as a precaution in case if some stones/debris was stuck on the older ones (not required, but good to do it).

If you don't know what's a dot-matrix, here's a sample pic (or just google it):
http://www.wonderquest.com/2002-07-26-black-dots.jpg

Good luck!

Normal pitting or sand blasting is not covered by insurance. That is what is known as "wear and tear".

However if your windshield gets hit by a rock or a tree or a baseball, causing a crack or spider or just a round mark, that is covered under the comprehensive portion of your policy, and the deductible would apply. In our case we just switched carriers recently and decided to pay a little extra for a "$100 windshield deductible" rather than the normal $500 deductible. A month later our Acura windshield got hit by a rock from a truck, and the actual out-of-pocket was only $75 as our agent has a deal with the mobile windshield repair co. So well worth paying a little extra for a lower windshield deductible or waiver.

Our BMW front windshield has been sandblasted for some time, would like to get it replaced as hard to see when sun is in your eyes, but holding off for now. Who knows, maybe I get rocked tomorrow.
