Car Runs but Won't Move

New poster having trouble with '06 650i. Had a 2000 335 and liked it pretty well. Decided to step up to the more expensive model and have regretted it. Made a big mistake by going with the 6-speed rather than automatic.

Problem is that car has been choking or missing for about 2 months. Ran pretty well at high end speed. Choking gradually got worse until Friday when car actually stopped on DC freeway creating a dangerous situation. Previously, have had problem with dynamic drive failure. Spent 2,000 to fix it last year, but didn't resolve issue.

Really babied car for 6 plus years by restricting driving to highway miles. Car now has 90,000 generally good, high speed miles.

If anybody has experienced similar difficulties, please advise me. Car now sitting at dealing awaiting diagnosis. Thanks.

It sounds like you have a possible electrical problem. Has your battery or alternator been replaced trying to fix the Dynamic Drive error? A voltage overload from the voltage regulator will cause dynamic drive errors. The part is an 80.00 part that can be installed by removing the alternator. It sounds like you have some pretty bad problems, can you tell us more?

Sorry to hear about your problems. It's not often you hear about a 6er comes to a complete stop due to engine problems.

Sounds like you have a serious problem if the car stopped running so the dealer should have no problems finding the issue. It is probably either electrical or fuel supply related if it actually caused to stop.

Not sure why you are regretting the 6 speed manual tranny since I highly doubt it has anything to do with your car stalling. Besides being much more involving to drive, the 6 speed is a lot more reliable than the auto on the 6er.

Thanks for the understanding guys. Dealer says the problem is that the clutch needs replacement for $3,700 plus tax. Hurts since the clutch was, at least relatively, lightly used except wintering in Florida. I never thought that the clutch was that great even when new.

My mistake is buying the 6-speed was that living in the DC area and wintering in South Florida there is too much traffic and too many stoplights for a stick shift. I also think that it kills resale since few buyers want it. Did save a couple grand on purchase.

Anybody buy the hybrid option with paddle shifters? Drove that model down at the BMW plant in Greenville, SC. That car was completely different than mine. Never attempted to use the paddles and the computerized gas petal was extremely difficult to master.

I am not sure I fully understand the dealer diagnosis based on your description of what was happening. Based on what you are saying, the car died while driving. It stalled on you and weren't able to start? Why would a bad clutch cause that? If anything with a bad clutch in a manual, you would not be able to put in gear or it would be slippin at times. The clutch is there in engage and disengage the tranny form the motor and should not affect the strating of the motor. That diagnosis is a little suspect to me. .
