Is it worth getting brakes aftermarket?
I recently gave my car for service about the brakes, the dealer measured them and at only 35k miles he is suggesting to change all 4 brake pads and rotors. my brakes say they have about 1000miles on the front ones, but back ones have more than 10k left last time I checked. Now the dealer is saying that they need to be replaced as well. The quote he gave me was for $2000. My question is that should i get the brakes from dealer, or get the parts online and then get it done at local kauffman tire, or just get everything from kauffman tire, parts being aftermarket and not OEM. Please suggest me a way to go on these are they any different if i get it aftermarket or is it necessary to get from dealer. Thank You in advance

before my bmw i had MB s550 and needed to change breaks, stealer wanted 2k as well. i had some time on my hand so i went to autozone bought 4 pads for about $75 each and changed them my self in about 30min. i know its not that anyone would want to take the risk just because it sounds scary but it isnt really. but yes definatly buy them from somewhere else and let private shop do the labor.
Those have some great reviews... Akebono Euro Ceramic Pads http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/resul...&brand=Akebono you will also need to change the sensors, about $20 from the dealer Last edited by coco135; 04-14-2013 at 11:54 PM. |

Dude I change my rotors every 10k miles (every other oil change) and pads every oil change (at 8k miles). Though I don't recall paying 2k. It's usually 1.5k for both 4 rotors and pads.

Rotors should last 2 sets of pads. Definitely no need to replace at oil change interval. +1 on the Akebono Euro Ceramic pads. You can easily do this yourself. Many online write ups available. New rotors, pads, and sensors should be less than $500.

Yeap rotors last 2 sets of pads. I've to change them this often because the car cic shows them up as empty and need to be changed. Keep in mind this is a 2+ ton car and is driven in excessive traffic in Istanbul. 0-200-0 is a common occurrence every day. I also need to get the pads replaced every oil change on my Jeep Grand Cherokee.
