Brake pad life
We have a 2011 50i with 21,000 miles. The truck has the original brake pads. The vehicle info display claims that the rear brake pads have about 29,000 miles left to go, and the front brake pads have 46,000 miles to go. Can that possibly be? We do about half city/half highway driving. What sort of actual pad wear and display messages is everyone else seeing? Thanks.

Yes. We are on our third E70 and the rears typically go first. My experience is consistent with what you X5 is telling you.

I can't say that my rears have worn faster than my fronts, but I can tell you that idrive is a liar.........
![]() Whenever you take your truck to the dealer be sure to ask them to check the thickness of your pads. Depending on where and how you drive you will burn thru some pads. The E70 is a heavy vehicle. I drive mostly highway and county roads so I drive fast and I brake late for stop signs. Within my 100K of warranties I've had the fronts replaced at 36K, 60K & 91K. The rears at 60K & 94K.

Front brakes done at 24k(it's my wife's car.....I hope she's not on the forum). I-drive was consistent with replacement of the front brakes on that occasion. At 27k I-drive indicated the rear brake service was necessary. However, the tech measured the rears at 7mm. They did not do the rear brakes but reset I-drive for another 14k before the service is required. I-drive is counting down and is now at 10k till replacement. With I-drive, I think you need to trust but verify (i.e. have the pads measured).

Front pads and rotors replaced at 36K. I'm guessing they changed the rear pads at 90K because the rotors were shot. I had the extended maintennance program so it didn't come out of their pocket.

When I had my X5, the dealership did an early change before my warranty was up at 47k and replaced the worn front pads and rotors (well they measured it and it was close enough). The rear pads were not replaced until 60k (and not the rotors since it was on my dime and I was planning to trade in the vehicle).
