Question Ceramic Controls

Good day,

Has anyone updated any of their controls from standard to ceramic? If so, can you tell where you got the parts (part numbers) and if the job was easy to do?

I think I would really like to change my shifter and iDrive controls to ceramic.

I've not taken delivery of my car yet, however I did purchase ceramic controls to retrofit. I liked the look of the silver audio and HVAC knobs in conjunction with the ceramic shifter and iDrive controller. I felt without the knobs breaking things up my interior would be too much black.

Check www.realoem.com. I don't remember the part numbers off hand. Wasn't cheap, either.

Thanks wdimagineer! I did some searching around on the site and was unsuccessful at finding the ceramic controls. If you get a chance, can you post the part numbers or how you navigated the site to find them? I feel like a moran for not finding them!

The iDrive Controller can be found HERE in ceramic.

For the shifter we also ran across a Ceramic Repair Kit which appears to be just the ceramic covers for the shifter, it an be found HERE.

You're definitely missing something if you're not seeing any differences. No idea if I did it right, but I tried to attach pics of regular and ceramic controls.

The non-ceramic controls are metallic-looking plastic. The ceramic controls are glazed, hardened, and presented in a darker, glossy finish - almost black.

There is definitely a difference.

This is the only option I regret not getting. I figure if that was the biggest one I missed, I did OK.

Dealer or independent shop should be able to do it.

Why not purchase and have the dealer install them?

Dealer pricing on these small tasks is crazy. My dealer was quoting me 4 hours labor at $170 per hour to change the wood trim around the shifter.

Would those who have switched to ceramic share the process and costs?

Thanks!

If I switch the shifter and iDrive to ceramic, then what about the A/C and radio nobs?

The contrast will really make them cheap looking. Are they currently made out of a thin layer of tin foil?

Here a few pics, from the factory though, not added after. They have a very smooth, glossy feel compared to the standard shifter.

No they are plastic with a silver painted finish.

You must be kidding! In a $60k car?? Is chrome that more expensive?

I wonder what one would find in a luxury Japanese make??

So all the knobs are ceramic, including the a/c and radio buttons?

Correct. And if you have 4-Zone climate control, the rear knobs are ceramic, as well.
