Cool Fitting facelift ASK and facelift MMI to pre-facelift car

Hey guys....

This is what I have worked out so far.......and this does work.

well if you are so inclined to fit the facelift ASK and the facelift MMI to your pre-facelift car, I have worked out and confirmed the coding procedure. I have tested it and I will produce a video shortly.

First thing to understand is that the facelift ASK and the facelift MMI will communicate with each other by firmware alone but this can be disrupted by software. It is the Software that makes the difference...... unlike what Black_on_black was asserting.

Now because we know the FL(facelift) ASK and FL MMI will talk to each other, the next hurdle is to get the FL ASK to communicate with the AT.

If the FL ASK does not communicate with the AT, you will have no radio and when you push the mode button on the FL ASK it will get stuck in a 'program loop' on the radio menu with no sound. The only way to move on is to use the iDrive, the Menu button has become useless.

Now this may sound odd, but if you have a FL ASK in your car and can't get the radio to work, that is because it needs to talk to the AT via the MOST bus.

To solve this, you load the pre-facelift ASK file into the FL ASK. By doing this it writes the correct software into the FL ASK so it can communicate with your AT and L7 etc and the sound is perfect.

Once you do this, the Menu button works fine as do the AM and FM buttons. The unit will no longer get caught in a 'program loop'.

I discovered this when I connected my GT-1 and ran the factory BMW Progman, it would re-write my VO and reset the FL ASK, thus losing my radio and button functions. Once I reloaded the pre-facelift ASK file back into the FL ASK, all came back to normal.

I guess the next thing I need to work out is what command line the codes are to get the FL ASK to communicate with the AT, but this does work. I have repeated the steps many times now to verify it actually works.

Making a video now.

The object of this is to demonstrate that you do not need to spend money to change the AT. It is just a coding change again.

Nice info Ace!
Any chance you could show how you made the backup files from your pre-facelift MMI and ASK?

Also, did you follow some DIY for removing the MMI and ASK or did you figure it out yourself?

Will the facelift MMI speak to the pre facelift ASK, or do you have to replace both to get the functionality? Because if you reprogram the facelift ASK with pre facelift software your are stuck with a "pre facelift" ASK again?

Hey Blackbox760....just getting back on line a bit now. Yes, a Facelift MMI will work with the pre-facelift ASK fine with no problems. A facelift ASK has additional buttons so it is different to the pre-facelift ASK. You don't need to change your ASK if you don't care for the buttons on the facelift ASK.

Hi Acefx, have you got your oil level display to work or is it something that can't be done on a pre-fl car? I did get everything working on my 745i (2004) - ASK, L7, EDC, DSC, IKHA, Bluetooth etc - except for the oil level display, which stays on "updating".

The TCU was pretty much plug & play, since I had previously the professional phone in the drawer and TCU had the same connector as the new one. There was only one issue, I was getting the "SOS call system failure" message every time I started the car, when I looked in the TCU error log there were two errors "backup speaker failure" and "backup antenna failure" so I disabled both of these in the TCU config (because my car does not have them). After that no more errors from the retrofits, the only thing bothering me is the oil level display, can it be done on a 745 or not.

you don't have PDC sensors on your bumpers ?
Or is the back up speaker failure something else ?

I'm not to sure about the oil level , but I think some 1 mentioned
there is a different sensor for it in the newer FaceLift car , don't
take my word for it though I could have mis-read ...

The backup speaker is probably a speaker for emergency calls if the L7 system speakers fail. As for the phone pairing page, since the MMI I bought had had the bluetooth phone feature in the car it was in, it was just there under settings. If it wouldn't have been then a couple of parameters from "nicht_aktiv" to "aktiv" with NCSexpert in the MMI module would have done the trick.

Do you recall what module & what lines you changed to disable the 2 errors you got ?
A fellow member is having the same problem & he is coming by so I can look at it
