E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

help..setting auto door lock function

we have a 2012 128i coupe and we are trying to set the auto door lock fuction so when we start driving the doors automatically lock after 5-10 seconds. The manual states you do this by pushing up or down on the button on the turn signal lever. You scroll through to get to the icon of a key....but when we do this there is no key icon that shows up...its only date, time, dashboard briteness settings...
Does anyone know how we find the "key icon" to turn on this function...or doesn't this model come with this function...please help thanks!

While mine was set thru iDrive, it should work through the dash computer - controlled by the turn signal stalk. The '08 (non iDrive) manual states "Switch on the ignition" which has 3 possibilities:

(1) Turn on the ignition to "radio readiness" without starting the motor. If simply inserting the fob doesn't do this, try pressing the start button without holding down the brake (auto) or clutch (MT) so that the engine does not start.
(2) Start the engine - but do not put the car in gear.
(3) Start the engine and begin driving.

Some dash computer functions seem to work in one of the above modes, but not the others.

Hope this helps.

Tom

I've run in to that problem before. I can' remember the exact solution, but be sure the car is not moving. You may also need to have the engine off.

Keep trying. The key icon with the check mark will eventually show up. Then press the button on the end of the stalk to get the detailed menu.
The computer is touchy in my experience and need coaxing.

If you really want the car to lock you in I'm sure BMW provides a way to do that. Personally I'd rather do it myself. But I'm sure the manual tells you how to do whatever you want to do. (Mine provides FAR more information than any American wants to think about.)

Tom had it correct. You get different icons when you start the car.
