Another VANOS Question

Any one have an idea of how many E46 M3's actually had the Vanos issue? They built a boat load but if only 2% of all M3's have had the issue then I dont see the big deal. Reading these forums has me really paranoid about getting a used E46 M3.

It is a small percentage however there are ways to bullet proof the vanos. I have had mine for a decade or so and every valve adj I have made everything seems to be in order. Its a tough call but piece of mind can be had with besians upgrades if owning one scares you.

What do you have to do to bullet proof the vanos? And how much did it cost?

Here is Beisan's website which has some very good information of what to expect where the VANOS is concerned on the E46 M3.

http://www.beisansystems.com/

I recently purchased their S54 Rebuilt Vanos Solenoid Coil Pack, Vanos Sealing Plate Repair Kit, Vanos Seals Repair Kit, Vanos Rattle Repair Kit, Vanos Rattle Tools and Vanos Oil Pump Disk. The prices are listed, as well as a complete and thorough "how to".

Dr. Vanos also sells kits for the S54 engine, although at a bit higher price depending on what you order.

Either option is good. I am doing my VANOS bulletproofing next week when I have the time, as I have a 2006 ZCP with 68,900 miles and can hear the valves chattering.

BTW good idea doing the research on these cars. They're a blast to own and drive, but be sure to get all the facts first!
