Changing DME
I have a 2002 525i, I have been told the DME is bad. I had the strangest problem, the car was running ROUGH and I had codes of miss fires and fuel cutoff in almost every cylinder, I brought it to the dealer and they diagnosed the problem as a bad oil separator. This caused vacuum to be off the charts...this also caused a insane amount of crankcase pressure which pushed oil into places it wasn't suppose to go. It even went as far and blowing oil by the cam position sensor and through the wire harness and into the DME... There was actually oil dripping out the end of the plug that goes into the DME!! I replace the sensor and complete oil separator system w/hoses. Dealer said to also replace the harness and DME but told me that the dealer could only perform this because it would need to be programed. They wanted about $1900 which is ridiculous.... I have been told to search ebay for the correct salvaged DME with key chips for 300-400 bucks and I can swap it myself. Is this true? If so, does anyone have any sources besides ebay? I can't find one yet. This car has never give me a problem and now I have this strange issue...any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks, Joe |

The DME died on my E53 X5.
I bought a used DME, EWS module, ignition barrel and door lock with matching keys. They were all pulled from the same car. It was a pretty straight forward plug and play job. The second option is to buy a used DME unit and have it realigned to your EWS. Im sure there is people on the forum that could help you out with that. Cheers |
