Welcome to Bimmerfest, José.

The first step on your car is to read the codes for the check engine light. You are really hunting in the dark, unless you read what your car is trying to tell you. Most auto parts stores have a basic non-BMW code reader, which will give you an idea where to start. You may need to go to a BMW specialist for additional information after that.

I am assuming your car has an automatic transmission. Depending on the service history of your car, this could be a relatively minor problem, or it could signal a major problem. Unfortunately, your car has enough miles that this could signal the beginning of the end, for your transmission. Read through the posts above about automatic transmission problems.

Check out the Sticky Thread regarding Auto Transmissions, particularly the "No Reverse" issues....it`s fairly common.
