Everyone, that is, except BMWUSA. Despite the smaller engine, the 328 has actually gained a few pounds.

Yes, this is true, and it's why I'm not writing off the 335 until I have plenty of seat time in both. I've been wanting to get into auto crossing for a while now, so that's part of my dilemma in choosing. I've got plenty of time to decide though...no new car till next spring for me, purchased a GTI for the wife a few months ago.
Had a 335i and a 330i (e90). I'd almost certainly go 328/330i over a 335i expressly because of the handling. The nose-heavy feel of the 335i just doesn't light my fire. Lived with it. Never found that enchanting.

Agree, i had e90 328 and N54, the N54 was just an absolute beast but the 328 def felt more nimble and fun to drive in the twists.

It all comes down to what you prefer, handling or power. Tho both combine them really well.

Just learned who you are now after this and clicking thru on your sig link. Thought I'd mention I very much enjoy reading the Autoblog feed in the Pulse news reader app on my Droid phone!

Looking forward to your F30 review on top of all you've conveyed here already. Much thanx.

Thanks. I am still trying to figure out who I am!

I start writing it on Tuesday night (I have a few more things to get done first), so maybe it goes up the week of Mar 5...?

From BMW's press release (a 30-page document!):

"Drive and chassis technology have always been key areas of expertise for the brand, and agility and driving dynamics remain outstanding attributes of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. The new car belies its larger dimensions with an equipment equalized curb weight 88 lb (40 kilograms) below that of its predecessor."

Hmmm... "equipment equalized" What the hell does that mean?

My guess is it means compared to the e90 with AT, since that's standard on the f30 but wasn't on the e90, and assuming the AT weighs more than the MT.

So the MT 328 is about 50 pounds heavier but includes iDrive, comfort access and bigger wheels and tires. I think this is a reasonable trade off.

Here is the complete list of E90 and F30 weights for reference -

Weight Manual / Automatic
  • E46 325i - 3307
  • E46 330i - 3362
  • E90 328i - 3362 / 3428
  • E90 335i - 3582 / 3605
  • F30 328i - 3406 / 3461
  • F30 335i - 3571 / 3594

More E90 vs F30 details -> http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...940&highlight=

In the real world the Bimmerfest Project 328i with almost every option, manual transmission and 2.1 gallons of gas was 3367 lbs.

The most important thing is that this is the first time BMW hasn't packed 200 additional pounds on a new model.

Think about it.

Mein Auto: 2001 BMW 330xi
I drove a 328i AT Modern Line sedan last weekend. As an owner of an E46 330xi MT Sport, I was pleasantly surprised. More than enough power, yes the engine at idle was a little "clankier" than I am used to, but I was really impressed, especially as I kept a close eye on the MPG gauge for my 30 minute test drive. This came off the heels of driving a G37x Coupe, A4, Acura TL S-AW, and Volvo S60 T6. I have also driven as overnight loaners (twice), previous gen 335i sedans. For me I came away with my mind made up on the 328i. The combination of the sportiness (A4 is just a little boring), modern technology & interior feel (G37 feels outdated) and luxury (sorry Acura & Volvo) is hard to beat. But the real kicker is the MPG, and I may be crazy but with predictions of over $5 a gallon (in the Midwest) this summer, it does matter. I was IN LOVE with the 335i that I had as a loaner due to the push back in my seat feeling that it could provide at will, and would never turn one down. But at the end of the day I'm not driving at crazy speed or taking it to the track, I love to drive and love the I6 of my current vehicle, but honestly the Turbo 4 will do the job for me. It has more than enough power and with superb handling I am good, the only worry I have is reliability but with the prospect of a Zero Maintenance lease on the horizon, my mind is made up.

BTW, that Volvo was much better than I expected, had the acceleration of a prev gen 335i (really) and the seats are far better than anything I drove (not even close), but was a bit cramped and with it being fairly heavy & with AWD, the MPG just isn't there. The A4 would be a great/safe choice, just doesn't have that same feel for me. I thought the Acura was really good too, just couldn't shake the "luxury Honda" feeling even if its just in my head. The G37 was just not my thing....

My story is going up on Autoblog in about 49 minutes. I will post a link here when it does.

Unfortunately, most of you will likely find more detailed (aka interesting) stuff about the F30 in this post, as I was limited by space in my story. I cut over a thousand words out, mostly track impressions, just to keep the focus on the 335i.

Again, if you have any questions post here and I will reply.

Thanks.

I spent way too much time writing that story I just knew too much about the 3 Series (made it really difficult).

I'm off to the New York Auto Show on Tuesday. Should be fun.

It was a great read. But a lot of the surprise was missing having been a reader of this thread. -big-grin-

It's also interesting to realize that perhaps every article written by one such as you requires the same level of editing when the writer is passionate about the subject.
