Yes, with the button just in front of the toggle (see earlier picture).

Mike,

Did you happen to have a chance to evaluate non-leather seats in a sport pack car?

Nope, all two dozen cars had leather (or what appeared to be leather).

All the time... driving to a meeting tonight in Torrance. Tomorrow AM heading to LAX for a flight to Chicago. No time to stop either day. Maybe next weekend?

I could never get the hang of drinking and driving a manual transmission but it does seem a bit odd that they'd put a removable shallow tray over the cupholders. I'll guess there will be a LCI change, if not sooner. (Maybe just not including it and pricing it at $14.95 in the accessory catalog.)

Does the top (#1) compartment open on US cars?

Interesting picture. I didn't think sport auto transmission was available unless one was getting the Sport Line. However, this picture should a Modern Line car with the sports auto transmission. Where did you get this pic?

No it does not open.

I keep the other lid (2) open all the time to power my radar detector... and since I have no NAV on this F30, I need to run another cord down to the back seat to power my Garmin (there is no power in the armrest storage!). It looks sloppy.

Thats a european car which has different options/limitations than american cars...i dont think that compartment opens, i would guess there is computer hardware behind that plastic thing.

I tried a Modern trim 335I automatic today and totally agree on many of your points including the steering. So we may easily have similar tastes!

I think many of the GPS units run in 5v USB power, right.
Time to lobby for detectors to run off the same 5v so you can power 2 devices from a 12v -to- 2xUSB adapter.

That's like my old Volvo -- one outlet near the ashtray and one at the rear of the console. So I guess they're providing two outlets for the US market again.

That #2 compartment with the door looks a little small for a place to hide the V-1 display.

I think I read somewhere there were four outlets in total, those you mentioned, plus one in the glovebox and one in the trunk. Maybe the glovebox one would work better than the back seat one?

Edit: Found it! Page 145 of the owner's manual. Says there is one hidden behind and below the glovebox, next to the center console.

Hi Mike,

Regarding the adaptive suspension -

I thought that for those without one, there's still the eco/sport/sport+ etc. to change the throttle/shifting characteristics?

You said that the suspension setting goes with everything else - so like what you said, sport/sport+ would put you in the harsh side of the suspension setting also, and one can't program it otherwise in iDrive?

I assume that the regular sport suspension is like the "sport" setting of the adaptive suspension and regular suspension is more like the comfort of the adaptive suspension?

Roundel's article by editor Carlson talked about turning DSC completely off on the track. Did BMW ask you to leave DSC on?

Does variable sport steering improve the steering response?

Thanks.

Yes, it appears all cars have the eco/sport/sport+ button... which makes it even more confusing to tell which vehicles have the adaptive suspension.

The SPORT models will have a firmer standard setting... but I think the adaptive will have a firmer firm and a softer soft. If that makes any sense. The fixed suspension is a compromise.

Yes, BMW suggested we all drive with the setting on "SPORT+" as it will prevent most idiots from running completely off the track (it will not defy the laws of physics). Those of us with more experience were allowed to shut it off completely, but I honestly didn't find the need... having the rear sideways is hardly the fastest way around the track. With the setting in SPORT+ I could keep up (and pass) at will.

No comment on Carlson's driving skills (we shared track time).

- Mike

Mike,

I can't stress enough that having a trusted source like yourself feed us first-hand information like this is of immeasurable value. Your experience with the F30 so far is probably enough to save the average enthusiast some $$$ and possibly several hours at the dealer. Thanks again and I can't wait to read your full review on Autoblog.

Thank you. I really appreciate it.

I keep my F30 until Tuesday -- let me know if you have questions in the meantime.

(I am at the Chicago Auto Show right now. BMW says that dealers will have the F30 this Saturday.)

Mike,

Does your car have the upgraded stereo? If not, does it have the tweeters by the mirror?

It has the standard stereo, with tweeters on the mirror mounts... and I think it rocks. Plenty of bass and good clean highs. I personally would NOT upgrade the audio system (unless I was an audiophile, and then I would feel the upgraded unit sucks anyway).
