Marriott Rewards Premier Visa - No Foreign Transaction Fees!

Last year there was a thread here about credit cards that don't charge foreign exchange fees. One of those cards is the Marriott Rewards Premier (Black) Visa card issued by Chase. We used this card exclusively during our ED last May and didn't get charged any foreign transaction fees.

We recently got a mailing from Marriott Rewards/Chase and they're running a promotion. I wouldn't normally post something like this but if you have an upcoming ED and you don't yet have a credit card that doesn't charge FTFs this might be a good deal for you (and a little bit for me!). Moderators, if this violates any Bimmerfest rule, please feel free to remove, but please PM me also.

Here's what you get:
  • 50,000 Marriott Rewards Points after your first purchase
  • Free Night Stay after account approval (category 1-4 hotels, can be used for European hotels)
  • Annual Fee waived the 1st year ($85 value)
  • No Foreign Transaction Fees.
If you apply for the card now you could use the 50,000 points to stay at the Munich Marriott (Category 5, 25,000 points/night) for two nights. You could use the free night stay as another Marriott European hotel (Category 4). If you don't want to pay the annual fee, just cancel before your first year is up, but you also get one free night per year if you continue (Category 1-5 hotels).

Here's what I get:
  • 10,000 for every person I refer (after their first purchase)
Here's how this would work:
  • PM me if you're interested
  • I'll PM you with the phone number to call and my referral info
  • You call the phone number and supply my referral info
  • After you get your card you make a purchase
Legal stuff: This promotion runs until June 30, 2012. Allow 6-8 weeks for free hotel stay to be deposited into your Marriott Rewards Account and for bonus points to post. Only available to new Marriott Cardmembers. There's a bunch more legalese that I can scan if you're interested, but it's probably available on the chase.com/marriott website.

Spg amex

If anyone would like I can referred you to SPG AMEX. It would equal 30k points and looking at the Starwood website right now you could get many of the Sheraton, Le Meridien, Westin & Four Points Hotels in Munich for as low as 2,500 points to 10,000 points for free nights or Cash & Points of $45/2,800 to $60/4,000 for higher end properties. SPG Amex Gives you annually 2 stays (Not physical free stays) to reach GOLD Status faster towards the 10 you need and now cash and point stays qualify towards reaching status.

Send me a PM with your email and name if you are interested.

Its $65 annually first year waive, but you can cancel and not be charge!

Your friend will receive an offer for the Starwood Preferred Guest(R) Credit Card from American Express:
Up to 25,000 bonus Starpoints®, 10,000 bonus Starpoints after first purchase, then bonus 15,000 Starpoints after $5,000 spend in 6 months

2. You are eligible to earn 10,000 Starpoints for each approval up to a total of 500,000 Starpoints. Referrals must be submitted by February 13, 2012 and referred individual(s) must apply by February 28, 2012 and be approved. Please allow 6-8 weeks for Bonus Points to post to your account after each referred prospect is approved for the Card. Due to the confidential nature of the credit approval process, you will not be notified of whether we approve or decline any application(s) from individual(s) you refer.

3. To be eligible to receive 10,000 bonus Starpoints, referred individual(s) must make their first purchase with the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card within one year of Card approval. Bonus points will appear on their Starwood Preferred Guest statement 8-12 weeks after their first purchase. Your friend must use their Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card to complete $5,000 of eligible spending by the end of their first six months of Cardmembership, based on the date of their Card approval. 15,000 Starpoints will be credited to their account 8 to 12 weeks after you reach the spend threshold. Bonus Starpoints are for first-time Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Cardmembers only. Bonus Starpoints can only be received once per Cardmember, regardless of the number of Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card accounts the Cardmember may have or had.

Basically, if you have an annual fee paying card with Chase, it doesn't charge you FX fee.

Whoa! I just got off the phone with Chase. I have an $85 annual fee Continental OnePass Plus card. The rep told me that there is a 3% fee on any purchases not made in US dollars.

I think that in the thread about no FTF cards this came up. Some Chase cards do and some don't. I also found that the phone people sometimes don't know their stuff. Check out your credit card website, particularly what it says about applying for a new card, and see what it says. If your card does charge FTFs then PM me!

I actually talked to two different phone reps when I called to verify this as Marriott/Chase had just announced that they had dropped the fees about a month before we left before our trip last May. They were adamant that there would be FTFs. I actually tracked down the e-mail address of the spokesperson who made the press release and e-mailed her that the phone reps apparently didn't know about the change. She replied to me that she would have someone call me and I got a very apologetic person on the phone saying that yes, they did indeed drop the fees and if I had any problem to contact her after our return.

Resurrecting an old thread but with new info. I found this on a Marriott Insiders forum.

Chase is now issuing chip and signature (NOT chip and PIN) Marriott Rewards Visa Cards. This was apparently announced on 11/11/11 but cards with the chip were not actually rolled out until around October last year. People who have reported getting them already have used them at unattended kiosks in Europe that require chip and PIN, but they will work if you decline the PIN a couple of times in which case you will be offered the opportunity to sign.

Apparently if you do use the PIN associated with the card the transaction is treated as a cash advance and the foreign exchange fees are NOT waived and you will not receive any MRPs for the transaction.

Our cards expire in April so I called Chase to make sure that the replacement cards will be chip cards. The customer service rep I spoke to said that all replacement cards are chip cards. He offered to send us new ones immediately if we had an European trip coming up before April.

PenFed also offers platinum reward credit card that has no foreign transaction fee. (You probably have to be a member) There is no annual fee with this card and I think the money back percentage went down to something like 1% in 2011 or 2012 from 5%. Unfortunately, the card is not chipped, so it may be difficult to use in Europe.

I've used this card in Italy when I had to go there for work in October 2011. My wife also uses this card whenever she pays visit to her family in Korea (every year).

I actually have this card, it is great. You get 5 points/$ on gas; 3 points/$ on groceries and 1/$ on everything else.

Best part..NO foreign transaction fee...no wait, the truly best part..it is CHIP and PIN..not chip and sig, but a true chip and pin card. They just released the chip and pin recently, I ordered my new card 2 days ago.

While this thread is still reincarnated I'll note that I constantly get e-mails from Marriot with this same offer, 50k points, free 1-4 category stay after you spend $1000 on the card, 5/$ points for hotel stay, 2/$ points for tickets & restaurants, and 1/$ point for every dollar spent. First year $85 fee waived.
