Is there really more back seat room?

While I was at Passport BMW yesterday I noticed a 650i Coupe (Space Gray!) on the lot. The car is gorgeous, but there seemed to be virtually no rear seat passenger room...the position of the front seats appeared to leave mere inches for leg room in the back. I recall reading that the new 6 Series cars had more room for the rear passengers.

That's what BMW is saying, but I think it all went to the front seats and the trunk. I'm fine with it only being a 2-seater as I'd rather have the leg room and the storage over a real backseat. I don't know who they're trying to fool, but it's a 2 + 1 (with the passenger being normal-short and the rear passenger being short) at best in my opinion.

I just asked my son and my wife an unbiased question -

"You've both sat in the backseat of my old (I previously had 2 e64 verts) car and in this car. What do you think of the legroom on my new car?"

Both said it has more legroom.

I have the coupe rather than the convertible, and I had the 335 coupe before this. Clearly more space in the 335! The 650 backseats may work for kids or really tiny adults. I am only 5'10" and I hit the ceiling. Getting into the back seat for an adult will also require yoga/ contortionism skills...
It is a gorgeous car made for 2 adults.....

Slightly more back seat space... and I do mean slightly. We don't have children, but pretty regularly have one of my teenage nieces with us. I think the thing I notice most is that when she's in the back seat, my wife doesn't have to eat the dash quite as much to sit in front of her. But again, it's slight. Generally, if we're taking passengers, we drive something else.

Gran Coupe on tap as a replacement, perhaps?

Stat-wise yes, but way they positioned dash and driver seat, there is less in reality. Same seat position and I had more leg room on back of my '08 650 compared to the newly purchased '12 650

Those leather things in back are seats? Awesome, my fav ride has back seats to boot!
I am going to lurk around the Yoga classes here in town. If they put their legs behind their heads they'll fit nice.

Not complaining.

I couldn't have said it better than svp: "Gorgeous car made for two adults."

What's weird is the seats themselves are as well appointed as the front (as if they were meant for two adults.)
The legroom, though, just isn't there.

Wish they just deleted the rear "seats" and made a bigger trunk. Ice hockey goalie equipment is very space taking and I can't fit mine in my 650 at all.

I'm pretty impressed with the trunk space. You might be able to fit your stuff in the trunk once you have your coupe. I would imagine that the convertible has a significantly smaller trunk due to the storage for the top. It would have been nice if the brilliant minds at BMW came up with a unique use for the back seat area, but at least it is well appointed with the curved trim, the Nappa seats, and the contrast stitching that runs from the top of the dash all the way to seat backs.

I hope you're right. The convertible trunk space is beyond tiny, but my gear bag is pretty huge. 44" x 24" x 24" I think it's a lost cause for me regardless lol.

Haha. I'm not sure of the dimensions, and I can't measure (I sadly had to leave my car in Alabama during my trip), but it is pretty huge for a car of it's size. It is extremely deep. My CA was showing me the flap for the ski bag, and he looked like he was getting eaten by a giant whale while he tried to reach the back. The trunk also widens toward the back thus providing a decent bit of space. I wish they had given us a liner for the trunk's carpet, but they probably figured I'd be too annoyed by the manual trunk to care about a liner (and nothing on the BMW accessories site). I got a black towel to lay in there, and it works well. The color matches perfectly and it fits nicely. Just seems odd that BMW is forcing me to use a $9 towel when they could have easily raped my wallet with a $60 liner.

Yeah I kind of figured as much. I'm waiting on my M6 coupe and I'm coming from an S5. I was comparing the inside specs with my old car and they are very similar but the M6 is a little wider and has an inch more legroom. But the rake of the roof is lower. I'm 6ft and my head used to touch the roof when I got into my back seat, so I can only imagine my height or taller and they will be tilting their heads like MIB2. Not including the lawn chair folding they will have to do to get back there. So 2+(3/4) it is.

Very unfortunate given a Ford Fiesta has a backseat big enough for the traditional 2.2 children, according to Jeremy Clarkson.

Perhaps they should lose the rear seats which will save a lot of weight, put in a nice half roll cage and we will have the 6 series Club Sport!

I have been scratching my head over as to would I give up trunk space for more backseat room. I'm usually riding solo or maybe with another so my backseats doesn't really get used all to often by passengers and I do use the trunk alot more with caring my table and gear. But i know if I got a traditional "2-seater" I would be complaining that I can't fit more than one passenger and unless +1 in the cavernous trunk. haha Then it just comes to mind that if they really need to ride then just exhale deeply, get into the "back seats", and hold on for the ride. lol

Are you not all missing the point? You are only meant to look at those rear seats, not really use them. And they look gorgeous, don't they?

They are sexy though. I ordered platinum so I could look at them more.
