Death of the BMW naturally aspirated engine is upon us...

Was at the local dealership this morning. Was talking to the service rep about BMW moving more and more cars to forced induction/turbos when the service foreman overheard part of the conversation. He suggested that as of next month BMW will no longer produce a single car for the US market that isn't turbocharged. I wonder whether this is a worldwide phenomenon?

Either way, it seems as if the days of naturally aspirated engines are gone. With the obvious benefits of forced induction, be it supercharging or turbocharging (lower emissions, greater performance, better fuel economy, lower engineering/build cost) it was inevitable, I suppose, but I'm a bit surprised how quickly it happened.

That is all

Lower emissions short term but long term, I'm not so sure about reliability. Turbos have been shown to be reliable but that's not with BMW's insane service intervals. And from what I know of Audi turbos maintenance is very important.

Glad I have an e39.

CAFE killed the BMW engines. Very sad.

Still happy that I snagged the only model year F10 528i that still had the NA I6. Haven't driven a BMW with the new N20 yet, but driven my brother's new A4 with a turbo 4 - just doesn't compare with a big six.

Really? I seem to enjoy an awesome torque generated by my turbo. The car is pushed around like a toy with such abundant torque. Not sure if 528 feels the same way. They say the engine needs to work a lot harder.

I remember hearing some of the same lamentations when cars went from carburetors to fuel injection, but technology marches on. If it is not actually an improvement it won't stand the test of time, but I think turbos are the way of the future for gasoline engines.

F*cking Americans with their stupid oil independence ideas are responsible for this.

That said I really love the Biturbo V8. Only thing I would love more would be a Biturbo V12.

I almost ordered a 2012 C63 AMG with the AMG performance package to get one of the last sedans with a high hp NA motor. But in the end, decided I wanted more comfort (including ventilated seats) and a BMW.

I definitely hate to see NA motors disappear.

The current M3 will still be sporting an NA engine until end of life which is rumored to be mid 2013 but yeah it will be the only one left in a few months time. FI and NA both have their advantages, in general it's a pity the choice will go away and since I'm a big fan of high revving engines it's not optimal but with FI engines like the one in the Nissan GT-R leading the way I'm not to concerned.

I love my TT V8. For me, it's a big improvement over e60's NA V8.

RIP N52. I test drove the '11 528 with the N52. It was beautiful. Such a shame that it's gone now.

It sounds and feel so good that it doesn't matter. And it's hardly slow either.

I have a 2012 528i. I also had a 2011 528i and a 2006 528i.

I'll take the 2012 TT over the NA any day. The torque makes it a great ride. Almost as fast and much better mileage than my 650i.

I think anyone really wanting a NA should get a BMW with round tail lights

Time marches on, get over it...Oh yea, drive it before you put it down.

NA engines are great but the new turbos take them to a new level it's the sign of the times everyone is going in that direction new cafe standards demand more fuel efficient engines.

I thought I read it is actually mid 2013 for the last production of the E92 M3. You may have more current information and if it is 2014 - then I will be lining up for one of the last ones.

(I see you just edited the year back to 2013) so ignore my comments above!

I agree it is a pity if there will be no choice.

On the other hand BMW were doing turbos way back in the day, and still developed NA engines.

Like you I am a huge fan of NA Engines. The sound of the current M3 is mesmerizing.

Not only the NA engine will expire, soon a three cylinder BMW will be introduced.
After making this remark, I gues I better take a long forum holiday....

There was an article about this on Autoblog. They were predicting 3 cylinder BMW in the US within 1-2 years.

As Sophocles put it - no one loves the messenger who brings bad news. That said, I hereby grant you diplomatic immunity on the topic of 3 cylinder BMWs, unless of course your say the next 1M will have a 3 cylinder, then the rules of war no longer apply.
