2012 740i Black Sapphire -- First Detail

So I picked up my new Black Sapphire Metallic 740i from the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg on Friday, made it home on Saturday, and immediately did an exterior detail on it.

Here's what I did...
- Foam and Wash w/CG Citrus Wash and Gloss at high concentration
- Cleaned wheels with Sonax FE wheel cleaner
- Meguiar's APC+ on tires
- Iron-x spray down
- Rinsed
- Dried with air compressor/MF towel
- Clayed a couple areas
- Optimum Finishing Polish w/Tangerine Hydro Pad on D/A
- 10% IPA wipe-down and inspection
- 2.5 Coats of Einszett Glanz (hood and trunk got 3, rest of car got 2)
- 2 Coats Wolf's Chemicals Rim Sealant on Wheels
- Wolfgang Trim Sealant on tires
- Invisible Glass wipe-down on windows
- Einszett Spray Wax/QD wipe-down as needed

I'm happy to say that the Performance Center did a pretty darn good job on the prep, so this was an extremely easy job. The car did not have any dealer-installed swirls, and was pretty much free of any micro-marring or hazing. It also didn't have many contaminants on it. Most of my polishing was just cleaning the small areas I decided to clay.

(I can of course complain about the factory BMW orange peel, but that should go in another thread. BMW seems to be committed to 'textured' paintjobs. There is a X5 door they have in the visitors area of the Spartanburg factory which showcases the layers of paint and rust protection to visitors.....and it has orange peel. My car is better than average, so I'll live with it.)

Here are some pics....

First -- here is what's left of my Wolf's Chemicals "The Mask" spray on bra airplane carry-on safe travel kit. I only needed about 3oz and a very strong index finger to cover the grill and front of the hood. I sprayed this on prior to the trip home from the Performance Center. It works great -- spray it on, forms a thick layer of protection which is water soluble. When you get home, spray it down and 99% of bugs just fall off.

some shots in full sun...

40 degrees and sunny in Florida...

Cleanest wheel barrels I've ever seen, wonder how long they will stay that way with the Wolf's rim sealant, I have high hopes. Plus the wheel design of the 20" wheels make it very easy to get to the barrels and clean them.

Fairly satin finish from the Wolfgang trim sealant. I saw this stuff used when I was down at PBMA, and I like how it works. A little goes a long way as well, maybe 3-5 drops per tire.

this is what I love about Black Sapphire Metallic, it goes more gray/charcoal in the sun and more deep black in the shade

My daughter inspects her new mini-van...

full walk-around...

she loves that bucket...

decent reflection shot...

Done!

sleeping tight...

cleanup sucks...

Thanks to DetailersDomain, AndrewBigA and all the folks who have provided great information on this forum. It was great to be able to apply all that knowledge to my new bimmer!

(AndrewBigA -- I'm going to top with Lusso Oro soon per your recommendation, but figured I'd try just the Einszett alone first)

Great looking car. Miss my 335 in Sapphire.
What is the garage floor finish? Looks like granite.

Thanks! The garage floor finish is an acid stain on the concrete, topped with a layer of polyurethane. It was sort of an experiment that turned out well. If I had to do it again though, I would go for extreme-low-gloss poly. We used satin and it turned out ultra-glossy which shows imperfections too easy.

Thanks guys -- my daughter isn't extremely helpful just yet at 18 months, but she sure thinks she is.

For those cringing watching her wipe down my wife's car with a dirty sham-wow -- sorry, it's my daughter, was too cute to stop her. I'll figured I'd just polish out any damage....plus it's silver anyway
