Check Engine Light - ARGH

Yes, I hear Sheldon chastising me, for the last month... my local indy wants to charge $100 to diagnose it... before I HAVE to do that, any ideas, or a test I can do myself? There is absolutely NO sign of any symptoms that worry me, it is operating perfectly except for that annoying light. Thanks!

I don't know what things are like in Florida, but in many parts of the country you can simply go to any Autozone, O'Reilly, etc., and scan your car for free. Once you get the codes we can help you troubleshoot it.

Personally, I bought a bluetooth OBDII reader off Amazon and bought a $5 android app called Torque. Works like a charm!

You mean they will do it for free, no obligation? Somehow that seems too good to be true... someone suggested I get the scanner on ebay and do it myself.....

How much was the scanner?

You also had the engine light on, and what did the scanner say u had a problem with?
And where is the plug for this scanner on the E36?

My CEL was for a fuel system error. I know about it from smog, just need anew gas cap.

Plug is panel below steering wheel, just above the foot rest.

Check engine lights can illuminate for a zillion different reasons. When mine came on a long time ago, it would only turn on in cold weather and went away in warmer weather. Turns out it was because my t-stat had failed open and was causing the engine to run rich for way too long. But like I said, it can happen for a bunch of reasons.

But yes, in most states, auto parts stores keep an OBD2 scanner behind the counter, and they will usually allow you to borrow it for free. You typically have to leave your ID or something else at the counter while you go to the parking lot to scan your car. Be sure to have a notepad with you to write down any codes you get. Then after you have them all written down, clear them out and see what comes back, if anything.
