is it a convertible? if so push down on the top storage lid (hold it down) and youll hear the trunk unlock.

^This.

There's a microswitch under the tonneau cover on the passenger side. If the switch doesn't trip, the car thinks the cover is open and will not let the trunk open. Put some weight (a lot of weight if necessary) on that part of the cover and you may hear a click from the trunk, then you can open it. You may need 2 people for this.

If it isn't a convertible, then I have no idea.

I had same problem on my 1997 328 convertible, and ended up using a hole saw to put an access hole behind the rear license plate where I then found the latch that I was able to open with my finger. Probably was a bad switch somewhere, but this access hole got me out of a bind.

If it's not a convertable you can gain access to the boot (trunk) via the back seats. I had the same problem but after dismantleing the boot solenoid & giving it a good soaking in WD40 all was well. Let me know if you need more detail...

Not all saloons (sedans) came with folding rear seats.

You can always remove the rear seats, though.
