Weight and Suspension (2 questions)

Two questions about the F30 relative to the E90:

Weight: The US brochure said that the 328i gained a few pounds. What happened? I thought there was a weight savings.

Suspension: One of the mag reviews said that the rear suspension uses more steel and less aluminum. I thought the new series made greater use of the aluminum in the chassis.

Apparently the 335i got lighter but the 328 got a little heavier -

Curb Weight - Manual / Auto
E90 328i - 3362 / 3428
E90 335i - 3582 / 3605
F30 328i - 3406 / 3461
F30 335i - 3571 / 3594

From the complete F30 spec thread - http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...940&highlight=

EDIT - Looked at some pictures and it does seem to be made of stamped steel where the E90 is aluminum. I would guess there was a cost saving or production reason to make these out of steel.

I wonder what happened to the 50 or so pounds of weight savings on the 328i (and 99 pounds with the 335i)? I realize the US is different, but the US/EU increments should be approximately alike.

What's really odd is that my E60 weighs in a roughly 3,450 pounds.

So the 328i is a smaller car, a newer car, has a smaller engine and (according to Emission) has less weighty sound insulating material. Why then don't the specs show a greater weight savings?

I thought I read a few weeks back that the 328i had lost about 80 pounds . . . did I dream that?

The numbers I quoted are US curb weight which is the weight of the car, 'standard accessories', full fluids, no driver. I put standard accessories in quotes because there seems to be a wide range of what that includes.

The press release with the weight savings was based on the euro numbers, so we're not comparing apples to apples here. I should dig up the euro numbers but I'm guessing that is where the weight difference they quoted comes from.

1st thing about this new model I wasn't thrilled to hear. Stamped steel has poorer elastic rebound than aluminum (i.e. more chance of bending rather than bouncing back after hitting a big deep sharp-edged pot-hole)
