Glossy Back Improvement Before & After

(Sorry - should be 'Glossy Black') I have been looking at the chrome grille and chrome side marker - and how they don't quite fit with the glossy black shadowline window trim and B-pillar against my nice Space Gray 5'r.

Today I finally had some time to fix that. I bought a glossy black grille and covered my side marker chrome with glossy black Shadowline Vinyl - which worked very nicely.

I'm very happy with the results and can't wait to see it in the daylight. Here are a few before and after shots. I'll try to get some good shots of the full front quarter tomorrow, but I thought you would like to see this first. Now I just need to get rid of the cheesy chrome license plate frames - and oh yes, I will be making the 535i on the trunk glossy black too, as soon as I have the chance.

BTW - you don't have to unbolt the top of the bumper and and pull it forward to remove the grille. There's another way that works well. There are also a few tricks that make removing the side marker easy. I will share both if anyone asks.

Regards,
Q

I ask!

My 550 is on a ship crossing the Atlantic right now, but as soon as it gets here I plan to put in black grills. I've been wondering how I'd get to those tabs. Your primer would be appreciated.

Also, where did you get your black grills, and are you happy with their quality?

OK - here are a few after shots. I'll try to post a small 'how-to' in the next day or so.

Have never been into moding just for appearance sake, but in this instance that is one heck of a great improvement! Eagerly awaiting your instructions on how to and where to get pieces to do this to mine.

You may want to apply the shadowline vinyl to the "chrome" pieces next to the fog lights.

Wink

I thought about that and I'm still up in the air. My original purpose was to reduce the "bling" factor by harmonizing the colors. Since the trim piece is about the same silver as my wheels, I don't find the color jarringly out of place. - But the nice thing about Vinyl is that it can be removed about as easily as put on

Regards -

There is very little chrome on the front or the rear. I left the chrome on the sides alone (I don't have the shadowline trim) and blacked out the front and rear (black 535i and license plate frame). The only "shiny" things remaining, fore and aft, are the BMW logos.

Good Job Quacker,

Too much chrome is a bad thing. (IMO) Going with the vinyl was a good choice.
Your car looks great, more cohesive and "flows" better. Not monochromatic, and tastefully executed. You are right; the black trim pieces go with the great with the shadowline trim and they 'pop' against the SG paint. Are you thinking about those pesky orange reflectors yet? (did mine front and back in body color)

Well done, it looks great, much better than stock!

Yes - I do think about removing the orange reflectors. But I also keep thinking about the safety that they offer. Inspire me please.

You go to all that detail to achieve a consistent look, but then that BMW CCA emblem looks totally out of place. Perhaps you can black-out the CCA emblem.

Well if you decide to do it let me know cause I have the space grey inserts to replace the orange reflectors. I decided not to do mine cause I dont mind the reflectors. So make me an offer I probably let them go pretty cheap

Thanks for the offer. I see you have the "M" bumper. Mine is the non-"M." Do you think they are the same part?

Yes. I dug up your how-to thread from September and bookmarked it for when my car gets here. Irene looks perfect.

Still interested in Quacker's grill removal how-to.

The side of the headlamps have reflective qualities also.
Finally if you are really that concerned you could wear an orange safety vest while you drive

OK - So here's my little DIY. I hope to answer a few questions that people have been asking along the way. I'll cover both the grille and side markers:

First the grille:

First, you will want to use blue or masking tape and cover the bumper around the grille. Slip short pieces between the grille and the bumper - don't overlook doing this. No matter how you do it, some of the maneuvers will have the grille rubbing against the paint. I used ~3 inch pieces and slipped them in between the grille and bumper overlapping them about 50% so I ended up with 2 layers.

Second. There really is nothing wrong with removing the 6 bolts that are found under the hood after removing the rubber weather strip. You can search for this method - and I suggest that you find it so that if you get frustrated with the method I describe here, you can still go forward. Initially I did not want to do it that way, believing that I might bend the bumper too much and stress the paint, but it doesn't actually hurt anything. But there is another way to do it as well. As you can see in the picture, the grille is made in 2 parts. The front part, consisting of the outer lip or bezel must be separated from the back half during removal. As you can see in the picture "4 upper Clips", the front is held on by 4 clips (in this case - chrome clips on a chrome bezel). You are looking at the top of the grille. There are NO clips on the bottom. If you elect to go in by removing the bolts under the hood, you will be prying these up and pushing them forward. Here comes the alternate way: there are slots under the clip that can be seen up under the grill from the front of the car. See the pictures "Clip From Front" and "Clip Back Angle" You can use a knife with a sharp point to push up in the slot to the side of each clip and pop it out. See "Use A Knife." The trick is that you need to be pulling forward on the bezel at the top (not the ribs) at the same time or the clip will pop back in while you are doing the next one. Do not be afraid to use a good deal of force. You will not break anything. Too little force and you will never get it.

Eventually, the top of the bezel will come forward - hinging on the bottom of the grille. This is where you will be glad you taped everything up. Keep pulling and it will come out.

Next you will see the clips that hold the back end of the grille in place. You can not see them until the bezel has come off. A ring of them encircle the grille. They look like the picture "Ring Of Grill Clips." Using a sharp point, push on the face of the clip (dig in a bit) and press toward the center of the grille while pulling forward with force. Each clip will pop into the bumper slot and move forward. Continue using pulling force and leveraging the clips until - voila! The grille pops out.

Putting the new grille in is very easy. Fully assemble both halves - front and rear. Approach the gaping hole in your bumper and press it into place. It will snap in. Next post is the side markers...
