Now the side markers. I covered these with http://shadowlinetrim.com/ glossy trim. ~$20 a roll and worth it. It looks way better than paint ever could and in a fraction of the time. Besides - painting on chrome and getting it to stick is no easy task.

First do like the last post and cover your paint with blue tape. Try to slip it under the side marker wherever you can. Next take a good look at the pictures. Note the front metal spring clip, the rear locking ramp (looks like a "V"). and the broad plastic spring thingies .You can see the top one - and there is a bottom one too.

Using a credit card (A Capitol One card that is maxed out or a Star Bucks gift card is suggested) slip it under the front of the trim and depress the metal spring clip. Simultaneously, push the trim piece forward. The goal is to get the part so far forward that the rear locking ramp can clear the sheet metal at the back of the hole. As you get it forward, it will start to come out just a bit. Using your credit card, slip it in the side and depress those plastic side clips - both top and bottom. The whole thing will suddenly come out if you do it right.

Then it will be obvious how to get the chrome piece off the light fixture. Work slowly and carefully to get the Vinyl nice and wrinkle free. The roll I bought is plenty big ~30ft, so starting over if you mess up is no big deal - just take your time. The wrapping tape is some very interesting stuff. Plenty stretchy and sticks like crazy. Don't forget to thoroughly clean the chrome before you start. You will see all the imperfections in the surface.

It will be obvious how to put it back in. Just lead with the front edge and press forward until the back snaps in. Ta-Da!

What's next? I will be doing the 535 i on the trunk in glossy black when I get the chance. I'll post the process as I go.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the e mail for the supplier. I'm waiting for delivery of MY 2012 335i SPORT, Black Sapphire, Black Dakota Leather. In order to get what I wanted I had to go with Black Glossy on the dash and I'm not to happy about that. I asked the supplier to send me a sample of Black Matte to see how it would look in place of the Glossy. Thanks again
cheers

Quacker, thanks for the "how to"! With it I definately would have busted the markers. Kudos.

If it's any comfort to you, I bought a set of extra side markers before I started. I did this because I also was concerned that I might break something. The benefit was that I was able to study the part and how it was held in, which made removal much easier. It only cost me ~$100 so it seemed worthwhile, and it was.

I just finished mine off in matte vinyl the other day. I applied vinyl to...

- Window trim
- Door handle inserts
- Side markers
- Front reflectors (will be color matched, but I'm just waiting for them to arrive)
- Lower front grill pieces (not sure what you call them, but they are grey/silver stock)

I also just got the new wheels put on today.
