Question Dinan Upgrades

Here is a question you could not ask before since the 2007-2011 My could not be chipped or modded.

Has anyone applied any of the Dinan performance or handling modifications since the new X3 uses the N55 engine which seems to be identical to the 355?

Seems like a really easy way to get the new M class type performance without the added cost.

Any thoughts?

I am due for a new toy soon and have narrowed it down to five vehicles.

The new X3 and 335xi are still in the running since I have discarded a lot of my negative feelings about BMW as they seemed to be the result of a crappy dealership I went to (Passport BMW, MD) as a result of really positive feedback from dealing with Russel BMW, MD (yes I compliment as well as condemn).

So, no one has even thought of this? Seems like a great way to get the rumored performance of the new M class without the heavy price tag.

BTW, I sent an e mail to Dinan to see if this is possible and what are the pros and cons, aside from the typical heresey response that you are messing with warranty. And, it's already fast enough. The Bugatti Veyron is fast enough. Other than that...welllllll

I have not read about anyone that has done this yet on either of the boards I read. If I come across someone, I'll be sure to post it

That is something to consider after the warranty is up. If I remember correctly Dinen provides the warranty coverage if the car still has warranty.

After hundreds of hours of hard work by the Dinan engineering team the N55 Performance Software is now available for immediate download via OBDII at all Dinan Dealers around the world. Dinan, the most trusted name in the BMW aftermarket is now offering the most anticipated Performance Software in years and as always is covered by the most comprehensive and longest warranty, a BMW new car factory matching warranty coverage up to 4 years / 50,000 miles.

It is well known that the N55 engine software has been a tough nut to crack. Our 4 full time software engineers were able to make a blistering fast software tune that will push your guts into your spine, smoke the tires and put a big smile on your face. Dinan Performance Software is so much more than just tuning up the turbo boost. It is a fully re-tuned engine management program that maximizes power while keeping all the BMW factory safeguards in place. Protecting your BMW while giving the most performance is the definition of "Performance Without Sacrifice". Drivetrain and engine components are analyzed for strength then the program is tested on the dyno and in the real world for durability and drivability. Dinan matches the new car warranty coverage for up to 4 years or 50,000 miles, including the possibility of consequential damages. I would still be leary of a "factory matched warranty"... what happens if the third party warranty company goes out of business?

You loose the BMW warranty installing the Dinan tune no?

Me530. i read that to on the web site, but is the N55 retuned for the X3? Maybe shift points are different (need to be different?).

There is a large difference in power to weight ratio that may need to be accounted for when using a chip tuning.

I have sent an e mail to Dinan to see what they say, and will post here when they do.

lb, "you lose the BMW warranty..." No, what you get is the Dinan warranty that will cover anything caused by their tune and BMW covers the rest. The good part of that is that Dinan has the chops to make things stick, if (whatever) was not caused by their tune, then some SA can't sluff it off and say the tune caused (whatever) it was and there is no coverage. Mind of course the install has to be done by Dinan or one of their authorized BMW Dealer shops. Which of course is the way it should be done anyway.

Be careful spreading around too much marketing speak.

Over the years there have certainly been issues reported with Dinan/BMW warranty claims, and even dealers dropping the Dinan business because of it.

On the Horizon

Dinan replied today.

"We don't yet offer software for the X3, but you are correct in that it shares the same N55 engine with the 135, 335, X5 35, etc. The X3 and 535 software are currently under development as the communication system is different on these vehicles. We hope to have this sorted out in the coming months".

They have me on file and are going to e mail me back when it is available.

So good news for those of you that want the added torque and top end without having to spend a fortune and wait in line should they decide to make ar eall M Class X3.

ps yes in my haste I forgot to read that last line of Coming Soon..Doh!

"anything" was probably a poor choice of words. Perhaps "most problems" would have been a better choice. To be fair I have not read, or heard, anything about warranty problems with Dinan not stepping up to the plate. Which of course is to say there may well have been some. I still think it is the best way to gain enhanced performance at the least risk, but that is my opinion.

I'm in Cockeysville and go to Towson BMW. I have had all my cars serviced there and bought my 2012 X3 35i Msport Carbon Black from Towson back in October of last year (took PCD in NC). Got my vehicle for $500 over invoice, PM me to get my sales reps name. Let me know if you ever want to go for a "spirited" ride, although my sales rep was pretty liberal during my test drive.

Russel's inventory was lousy and I had an absolute abysmal experience there when I asked to buy my X3 and only wanted to deal with a manager (as to avoid the back and forth BS) I was handed an idiot web sales rep to make the deal go down and I ended up playing the he said he said game anyway. I walked out insulted and pissed off.

can't tell you much about Northwest BMW because I never got to talk to anyone, they ignored me the entire time, had nothing on their lot and were uninterested in helping me. I'm young 30's so they must have assumed I was low-lying fruit. If only they knew doctors finish training before they turn 50

Sorry Russel dissed you. I have had great success with their service department, but their sales with one exception (the famous emily) has been pretty second rate. I had two sales guys almost get in a fight in front of me claiming first rights on who saw me first.

Typically what I do is send an e mail out to all dealers in the area with exactly what I am looking for. I tell them right up front that they have one and only one chance to get me their best price. However, I did with one dealer give them an opportunity to match the price as they were very good to my wife and she wanted to get it from them. As you may ahve guessed i don't buy from inventory so it really doesnt matter what is in stock.

How do these tunes affect mileage and emissions? Would the car still pass the latter?

For those of us in CA the (omnipotent and unaccountable) CARB decree what we are permitted to have. The Dinan folks will tell you if it is approved by CARB, since they are based here and know the rules. Mileage is of course a different story, increased performance does not go hand in hand with good fuel economy!

Is there any new word on any upcoming Dinan upgrades specifically for the X25? And more specifically the 3.5i?? I'd really like to get a few small things done to further enhance the X3. I think my first choice would be a tune of some sort...

Anyone have any concrete info??

Side note, who is this Emily, and what is this story? Sounds amusing...

Jup, Emily was (is) a very attractive sales lady that Evl posted a photo of sitting in a new X3 some time ago. She has moved on from BMW and is probably selling Jags or Porsches somewhere now. I would buy one from her! Evl will probably expand on this answer but that is about all I know.

Hah, I found a couple pictures of her sitting in the backseat of an X3... She's not bad, but it wouldn't persuade me to buy a car... In any event, I'm still in hopes for a few X3 specific Dinan upgrades...

If you met her it probably would. Last time I saw her she was wearing a one piece unitard (might as well have spray painted her clothes on). I am no photographer as pictures done do her justice.

She went back to law school.

Back to reality......Nothing from Dinan yet. I would call as the more people that show interest the faster they will get an upgrade out.

Going to send an e mail to Dinan, but thought I might check here first to hear if they had put on the chip for the N55 X3 yet.

Any news?

Since they are not moving forward with an M class as was indicated in some forums this might be the next best thing.

2011-2012 e70 X5-35i N55 Specs:

Peak Horsepower: 355 @ 5300 RPM
Peak Torque: 401 @ 3500 RPM

I doubt that a tune for the X3 is far off. I'll give Scott a call at DINAN tomorrow to see whats up.
