Comfortable Z3 seats

I've seen several threads posted on racing seats but does anyone know of a comfortable seat for a Z3? I find the stock seats on these cars to be lacking. If not new seats, has anyone found a decent and attractive reupholster option?

Thx
Matt

Hi Matt

I lived through the same feeling after I bought my 2001 Z 3 back in the fall of 2010. Had planned buying one with BMW Sports Seats but when I found my Z at a Chevy Dealer with just 5734 original miles I closed a deal very quickly. Have, since that time found a wrecked Z 3 in Virginia that had Sports Seats and interior trim was same code as mine. That vehicle had 49000 miles but Seats were in A One condition. Will be installing those seats in my vehicle in early spring after I take my Z out of storage. Am told will appreciate upgrade. Will keep you posted. After I make the switch will have a set of Standard Leather Seats for anyone that may be interested (code R7SN Beige Classic Leather).

The main problem with the Z3 seats is the lack of thigh support. There is a DIY on the web of tilting the seats up at the front to provide more support.

I've got the non M Sports seats in my roadster.
Drove 1,000 miles in one day last fall.
Had no problems and felt quite comfortable.
I'm 5'8" and about 160lbs.
I did stop every 2 hours for a stretch and bathroom break.
Have bought but not installed my seat tilt kit. I'm going to install it in the drivers side only.
My wife is 5'2'' and not sure if the tilt is going to put too much pressure on the bottom of her thighs.
I'll have her drive it and see if she notices any difference in the seats.
Now thats funny (Have her drive it) She is usually the one who takes it out on sunny days, while I'm working........

Good day guys and dolls

BMW had at least three versions of seats for the Z. The Standard Seat, the Sports Seat and what I call the Full M (3.2 l ) version of the Sport Seat. In my opinion each upgraded version offered more thigh support and in the full M version there was an Extention (Hump) at the front of the seat which gave even more inner thigh support. I tried to attach images of the three versions but was not able to do so, newbe on the block.

+1 on the seat tilt mod. Feels 100x's better. Probably the best $20 spent. It makes you feel like you are sitting "in" the seat rather than sitting "on" the seat.

Yes, do this. Go ahead and do both seats. It gets rid of that feeling that you're going to slide off into the front floorboard, and after you readjust the seat back to compensate for the rearward tilt, you will find that the lumbar support feels nice and solid too.

"In" the seat rather than "on" the seet is a perfect description...

Would be interested in viewing/surfing to Site where one can get/see info about Seat Tilt Modification Kit $20.

Yoda, you indicate your Z is a 1999 M coupe. If full M (3.2 l) surprised to hear you needed Tilt Mod as from what I learned, Full M (3.2 l ) machine would have Sport Seats plus Extention at Front of seats and added Hump which should give amply thigh support. However with more Tilt I can understand how one would get more of the effect of sitting IN rather than ON the seat. You might want to post a few pictures of your machine in YOUR GARAGE.

Would have like to append images of the three seat versions, but seems like I will not have access to that feature until I make a certain number Posts

RJJLZ3, I have never sat in any other Z seat other than an M but after an hour or so, I found out how uncomfortable they were compared to other cars I have owned. If the non M seats are worse, I feel sorry for all non M drivers.
I don't have any good pics of my car, it is a work in progress. It started off life with me as a wreck and is almost finished. When it is finished, I'll be doing some nice photos and update the garage. I'll give my build thread a gratuitous plug here but in all honesty, the seat tilt mod did make a huge difference in comfort. I put one in on my car and my uncle's car.

Smile Comfortable Z 3 Seats

Many Tks

Interesting, but am wondering if raising front rail that much puts too much pressure on back end section of seat rail at the rear fastening bolt or on the floor portion of the Z in that area .

Thanks for all the input. I'll try the mod first. I was actually thinking about trying to replace the foam but if this works it will save a bunch of time.

Whatever you do don't but the MZ3 seats!!! Dear god it's like siting on cracked milk create with a head rest you cant use and no back support! I have to say they look extremely sexy but I hate them!!! It is my biggest complaint about my car! The first 1 hour you like oh that guy was wrong, " these are GREAT" then any min after that you are going to be kicking yourself in the A$$!!! They are just painful!! Go with some Cobras great seats and supper comfortable... Well worth the money in my opinion...

Closed deal for a set of BMW Sport Seats with Front Extention but no Hump like in the M Version and when I swap them for my Standard Seats (no Front Support) in my 2001 3.0 l Cabrio will probably install them with the Tilt Mod Kit.

P.S. Had a look at your Album Nice Machine. You guys should Post your images in a smaller size, something like 1024 by 768. When you post using more pixcels, viewer sees only part of the image when picture is opened. Then one has to scroll around to see vehicle. In 1024 by 768 version image would open and fit the screen. Just a suggestion. I hope I am not the only one that has noticed this drawback.

I still cannot attach images without using a URL link. Definately want to attach images of three versions of BMW Seats to a reply to this Thread. Will keep posting, as it was suggested door will open when I reach 20 or 30 plus posts.

I did the mod today from parts I bought at the local hardware store. It does make a difference in driving position. I still want a little more cushion but it's a start.

I had the original regular seats that came with my Z and then I found a great deal on a set of ///M seats. The ///M seats are not as comfortable as the regular base seats. It's harder to he in and out of the car and it feels like you just sink into it rather than sitting in it. But the ///M seats look 10x's better than my old seats.

Hope this helps.

Yes these are sport seats

I recognized them as such partly because I can see what is called the Extention at the front of the seat. If they had been what I call Full M Sport Seats the Extention would have been a HUMP and it is a seperate piece of material, often in a darker colour to highten the visability. They look real good but according to some people do not improve comfort. All I will say to that is : To each his own.

P.S. To Rare M The Head Rest is not intended to be used as a Rest it is intended to be a protection against Whip Lash when hit from the back

I still have not reached the threshold to be able to attach jpegs to threads. As soon as I can will post three versions

P.S. to my previous post. If you are really interested in bidding for the Sport Seats suggest you start at no more than $200.00 per seat and go to no more that $250.00. Remember these babies weight about 50 lbs each and are relatively bulky. Shipping would be quite costly.

Has anyone done the extension on the M seats? I was actually going to try it on my set, HOPEFULLY it will help a little bit... GOD, those seats are spine crushers!!!

Thanks rjjlz3... I figured when I upload my photos that it would ask what size to import them, but i didn't...

If by Extention you mean changing the portion you sit on of you BMW Seat you will have to buy the foam part that sits under the seat cover plus the extended seat cover itself. I went on line and found these parts as I was thinking that way for my vehice, but all too costly from BMW Dealer $124.00 Foam and $827.00 Cover. Then you might have more thigh support but would not have the wider, shall I say wings, on the back part of your seat. If you wanted to buy those, Foam $180.00 and Cover $965.00. All that times two. If you are considering Upgrading to the Sport Seats you may as well bid on the set that Matt found on e bay ( post num 19 this thread) that is if blk is the colour of the interior of your vehicle.

After I had written all that, remembered you owned an M Coupe !!! Does it not have what I call Full M Sport Seats and therefore not only the Extention but the extra Hump in the center of the seat ???

I was darn lucky when I found Sport Seats in NC as the vehicle they were parting out had the same interior color code as my Z.

Ya I have the Imola Red and Black M Seats. Which look amazing but god they are down right awful!!! When it comes to comfort that is, my opinion... I was referring to the studs they use on the front two bolts, if anyone has put those on the M seats??? I was wondering if that would make a difference, because in my daily driver (08 Rabbit) i have my seat completely inclined???? I'm also 6' - 180lbs so the coupe wasn't really designed for people taller then 5'6" - 130lbs anyway...

So you were interested in the Tilt Mod Kit If you look at post num 16 of this thread you will see that Matt has done it. Like many others who have done it he seems impressed. I plan to do it when I install the sports seats I bought over the winter season. I`m 6ft and weigh 165. Will be interesting to see what upgrade to Sports Seats plus Tilt Mod Kit will do for me.
