F31 or X5 35d?

Hey everyone, its been a while, I've been in some training which required my attention. Anyway ..

I'm now in the market for more utility. I drove a F31 328i loaded and loved it. I also have my eye on a X5 but if I go the x5 route, it must be the diesel. My E60 is becoming a maintenance nightmare and I'm looking to trade up. My wife LOVES her loaded 320i and we realize we've needed more utility for some time now. Part of me wants to just do it right and go buy a F150 but I'm not one for pickups. Especially when the X5 looks so good and the F31 is so practical. My problems with each model: the X5- carbon deposit issues, limited diesel tuning, handling, insurance. And the F31- price for what you get, no manual trans, more space than sedan, but possibly not enough to justify purchase.

Thoughts?!

F31 ... I take my family (4 of us) on regular 500+ road trips to grandparents with ease. Also what I paid (42k and change w/ nav & lighting + a few more options) was smack dab in the middle of mid line Grand Cherokee & Explorer land and it's such a better vehicle. X5 ? nah that's a poser car and you don't get that much more space. Wagons are and were the future.

I'd get the F31, but they're entirely different vehicles.

I mights be able to help out on this question. I curenttly own the new F15 X5 and a F33 435i. I understand your looking at the wagon not the converible. But what I can tell you my X5 is a diesel and is the most comfertable suv I have driven. It drives for like a seden then it does as an SUV. With the disel you get lots of torque making it really fun to drive. The interior is really nice the first time I got my car I thought i was setting in a 5 or 7 series. The interior is much better in the X5 then my 4 series by a long shot. I have seen and been in the F31 and they are nice but I feel for a family that is growing it might get small really quickly. If you would like anymore information or specifc details about something let me know. Also on the desil X5 you can chip tune it to push out more horsepower if you would like but i found no need simce it is an animal already as it is.

U r asking this question in F31 forum, so obviously the answer will be F31, if you need space X5 is way to go, if you need handling F31. You are comparing oranges to Apples here. If you decided to go for X5 get M Sport, here r some pics of my 2015 X5 M Sport Carbon blackClick image for larger version

I went from the E70 X5 35d to the F31 328d.

-I miss my X5, not because I don't like the F31. Simply because I like the commanding road position, and for an SUV the handling is great.

-I love my F31. For some reason I feel I can transport more with the F31 (since it appears to have a few inches more in cargo length.....I COULD BE 100% WRONG). F31 (with DHP) gives that sporty/car like ride that is incredibly fun.

My F31 was fully loaded at an MSRP of just over 60k. The F15 similarly equipped will proably be 15k more??

So there really are 2 factors here I would consider since it really is Apples to Oranges:

1) Driving position -high and commanding or low and sporty

2) Price - 15k difference

Hope it helps

Waaaaay more space than a sedan. I've moved an entire apartment (minus the sofa) in the f31. This included dining table, chairs, coffee table, office furniture, entertainment center, etc.

Not all in one trip

Don't be deceived. The cargo space in the F31 is one of my top reasons to keep it.

The N57 engine in the X5 is new, hard to say if CBU is going to be a problem in it. Don't know why you're worrying (or mentioning) manual transmission, as neither have one available.

If towing is a consideration, X5 is the clear choice.

I moved me son from San diego to Seattle last september. I really should have taken a picture. I was able to fit everything in the back with the seats down and still have a clear view out the back. And that included a dining table he uses as a desk, his office chair. His giant desktop, all his kitchen stuff, bedding, a vacuum, cloths and a thousand other things.

I made the leap. I found one local in the right color, options, wheels, and options. I would have preferred black interior but the deal was too good.

Dealer CPO. It was a lease return and got an awesome deal, and they threw in the tire-wheel plan to sweeten the deal

I thought the F31 had less leg room for rear seat occupants.

Yes, you are likely correct. I never actually needed my X5 for moving/hauling items, so that is probably I view my wagon as equal to or greater in the cargo versatility department.

All this talk makes me miss my E70

Really wish they offered the F31 with a manual transmission; that would be the perfect car. Looks like VW may be the only option if you want a manual wagon; just wish they offered a GTI or R version of the Sportwagen.
