BMW continues on teasing the world with more concept cars in their new M Performance collection with the release of the concept M135i. The styling is sporty and blends a lot of the M characteristics into a small 3 door hatch design. The first opportunity for the world to see this beauty is at the Geneva auto show in a couple weeks. If you are looking to see what makes this an M Performance car, look no further than the sportier, elongated side profile of the car. The wide doors certainly give this 1 series a much more aggressive design than the 5-door designs in the 1 series line-up. Throw in the straight six-cylinder motor feature M Performance Twin Power Turbo tech and you get more than 300 horsepower to play with. We wouldn't suggest holding your breath on seeing one of these in the United States any time soon but it at least gives us a further glimpse into what BMW might have planned for other models headed to the US in the near future. |

Good, it's still just as ugly as all the other new 1'ers. |

Coupe looks a little better maybe, hard to tell. Dunno if this render is accurate.

Looks are subjective to everyone but, in my opinion, it doesn't get any uglier than this....

That coupe looks nice IMHO. A huge improvement over the E82.

They should have done the M stripe down the hood. That would have looked better.

It has to meet European pedestrian crash standards, so they're limited in what they can do.
I think cars like the 911 get a waiver due to low production or something.

I for one, would like to see an influx of simpler BMW's. Not nesscicarily styled just like the 1M hatch as seen, but I do like the hatch design for it's versitility. And VW is doing well with the GTI and it's varients. We don't Need 11 airtbags, i-drive, or navigation in a more base-line car. Just something really great to drive. Even if I have to be disagreeable with the style - I say, bring it BMW!

The bottoms of the headlights sweeping up like that towards the middle make the car look a little derpy and adds height to an already tall looking front end. It's like it's got some goofy anime smile.
Side note do not GIS "Pokemon smile". The results are NSFW and a little disturbing. Last edited by hotrod2448; 02-28-2012 at 10:02 AM. |

1. I sure hope the front looks better in person than it looks in pictures. European pedestrian standards sort of require a tall, blunt nose . . . but they don't require fugly headlights.
![]() 2. We're not likely to get the 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks, but if the picture of the coupe version is at all accurate, then it might be a pretty good looking car (headlights notwithstanding). Much better than the current 1 coupe, IMHO.

Why is everyone so horrendously negative about this? I for one would drive this in a heartbeat instead of the small hatchbacks available from just about everyone else. I love the lines of this thing. The only thing I don't like is the front, but I don't like it on ANY of the new 1'ers I've seen (saw the 5-door hatch in Munich). Still, when you're behind the drivers seat you're not looking at the front anyway.
For my needs this would be about perfect; coupe fun with hatch practicality. I'd actually then be able to get my dog in the back of my car (75lb Siberian Husky) to take him places.

^ While I can totally understand your viewpoint, the ultimate driving experience, for me, entails a sporty car with excellent feedback, but also something that I be totally thrilled about in the looks department. When I park my e36 ///M in a parking lot, I can't help but look over my shoulder once or twice to admire its lines. It makes me happy just thinking that I get to drive it and enjoy it. But this...thing... does not inspire that in me at all. For lack of a better explanation, I need to be thrilled visually, just as much as I need to be excited by the driving aspect of the vehicle.
Even if I had a great performing car, on par with any BMW, WRX, or Porsche, but it looked like scheisse, I would not be nearly as thrilled to own and drive it. Does that make me a "shallow" enthusiast? Possibly, but I don't believe there are many in the automotive world who aren't at least a tad swayed in their opinion of a vehicle based solely on the vehicles design and look. The coupe posted above is a huge improvement, and if it weren't for that front end I would be excited that maybe this could be a potential vehicle for me in a few years. But until this car gets an LCI or something drastic is changed about the snout, I don't consider this vehicle to be "the ultimate driving machine." |
