Tire Warning

Driving home today and I get the Tire Pressure warning, or so I think.

It is a symbol with a tire section and exclamation mark.

So I assume I'm getting or got a flat, I ditched my RFTs recently, it is Friday afternoon, rediculous traffic because Obama was in town, and this really sucks!

I get that feeling my steering is a bit mushy, so I find a tire shop and pull in, get out, whip out my pressure gage, and make the rounds.

All my tires are like 42-45psi.

So nothing wrong with the tires! I reset the TPMS system, and I'm still getting the warning. Go figure.

I finally read the manual, reset the TPMS (5 seconds you have to hold the thumb button) and so far all is good.

Whatz up with that?

This was a very hot day, like 86 Deg F, could my tire pressure be too high?

FM, was the warning yellow or red?

Did you try your Check control. You should be able to see which tire is complaining. I can see it on my idrive so I am assuming you should be able to get similar message on instrument cluster through check control as well. Yellow and red are also good indicator of low pressure or flat tire.

Irregardless, your pressures are too high.

Not sure about the BMW TPMS, but a guy with a Corvette C5 once mentioned to me that he got a warning due to having too high of a pressure in the tires. 45 PSI is too high and might be why you got the message.

I emphasize "might," as the BMW system may not warn of high pressure.

DnA, it was yellow.

I'm wondering if perhaps when I filled my tires it was a cooler day, say in the 60s and yesterday was the warmest day so far, around 86. Maybe the increase in Tire Pressure may have set it off.

I'll re-adjust my TP this morning and see. I don't think those of us with out the I-Drive can see which wheel is low, which also sucks.

Yeah..you have to have idrive to see which tire is causing the TPMS to go off. Reset those tires to around 36-38 psi all around. That is ideal for an E90 sport package car.

On the non-IDrive cars, a vehicle diagram shows up on the dash and indicates which tire is triggering the fault.... at least on my 10' D it does.

41/49 is placard pressure for staggered setup.


FM, I reset my FTM (Canuck TPMS based on ABS readout) about once a month after I check and set the tire pressure. I can't recall if the warning tolerances are the same for FTM and TMPS, but if it's been several months, and depending no what your pressures were at the last time the TPMS was reset, some pressure drift could set the system off.

Let us know if you have any more warnings..it could be one of the tires wasn't sealed as well as the others during mounting.

All my tires had good tire pressure, I did not lose any air since they were mounted. So that is not the issue.

I checked my pressure cold today, around 44 rear and 42 front, so well within the desired. Max is 50 for these Michelin PSS.

I reset the TPMS, no more warnings so far.

I've read the manual and they don't show that individual tire is displayed, it is just a global summary of Yellow or Red. You have to get out of the car and figure which tires is low.

I suspect it was just a fluke, maybe the hot day and the increase in tire pressure may have set it off.

Correction from 41/49...it's 42/49 (for 100mph/160kph and above).

I'm looking at the door placard right now. The manual says the same.

I just got a flat two weeks ago. Picked up a shard of metal entering an onramp. Kept driving thinking that maybe it didn't go that deep but three miles down the road an orange diagram of the car showed up on the dash with the passenger front tire showing low. I wonder why my 2010 has this and Flyingman's doesn't. Must have been a midyear model change.

This is all the warning that I get. No diagram of the car.

So, in retrospect I don't think I had a Tire Pressure alarm, but a TPMS fault.

So I rotated my tires a while ago (I have a non-staggered set up) and a few weeks later the TPMS went off indicating low pressure on the front, right. Turns out the tire with low pressure was actually on the right, rear. Any ideas on how to teach the TPMS system that tires/wheels have been rotated and are no longer located where the factory put them?

That said, it was very nice to get a heads-up from the TPMS. I wouldn't have noticed the nail in my tire until it was too late, otherwise. I'm running Michelin PSS (non RTFs).
