How do you update the Navigation System?

Hi,

I have a 2012 X5 and I noticed that the Navigation System date is year 2011? How often does BMW release Navigation updates and how do you get them? I noticed that a few new freeway exits in my town are missing.

Keith

New to the built in Nav world are we? Releases usually come out every year and are available for purchase at your friendly steeler. Depending where you live, changes are usually subtle. I would go to the dealer and see if the new exits are on the latest version of the DVD Nav. You might have the latest one.

Whereas in the CCC world of iDrive navigation updates were on DVDs and you could purchase them directly form NavTeq the current iDrive system, CiC, is quite different. Either the dealer must download the maps for you or you can obtain the source DVDs (not easily). In either case you will pay for the labor of the download plus the FSC, the enabling for your vehicle, or at the least the FSC. The DVDs, if obtainable, are under $10. The FSC as I understand it is about $200 or what the old DVDs used to cost.

I don't have a DVD-ROM based Nav system. It is Hard Drive based.

Yes, it is. But how do you think the map data is distributed?

You either get the data at the dealer via a download with your car connected to BMW's service and diagnostic system or you feed in three DVDs through the in-dash player which copies the data to the hard drive over 2-3 hours. In either case an FSC code sequence is necessary to unlock the new map data version.

Fsc

Any other way to get the FSC code as well as download and burn the DVD's to then install in 2011 750i?

Please clarify that. You mean you bought the discs and paid for a code? I understood what previous posters wrote, just not the last posting...

If yours is a 2012, you may not need the FSC code to load 2012 maps. Your car may be ok with just the 2012 dvds.

Can someone post a link to "Sierra5". Googling "Sierra5" and "BMW" didn't return anything relevant.

(FYI, bad form to post where you got something and not provide a link, because you're just going to get asked anyway!.)

Mea culpa! And apologies. I admit to not having read the entire other thread. I read about BMWRetrofit.com, tried that, and they're not there any more. I probably won't need this for another year or so. It will all probably change by then anyway.
