Trunk comfort access not working

I tried everything.

I called BMW and spoke to one of their "geniuses" and we walked through everything:
Fob in pocket
Foot swipe middle, left, right of trunk.
Valet mode
Etc.

We spent 15 minutes together.

I know car has comfort access per window sticker and vin decoder.
Also due to door handle operation etc.

Final genius suggestion was sensor was dirty or malfunctioning and go to dealer.

I cleaned bottom part of bumper. Did nothing.

Any ideas?

So do you have the Premium package as well with the power trunk? Are the other functions working, like the auto closing when you push the button inside the trunk lid? Time to let the dealer worry about getting it fixed.

I have the premium package. Does the foot trunk come with premium package or is it a separate option.

The car has comfort access per window sticker and all other features associated with comfort access are working.

I provided vin to BMW NA and asked them to confirm I had the feature.
They never said I did not or it is not part of comfort access.

Interested to see your resolution to this. I have the feature as well - comfort access. ANd mine does work - so long as you do an irish jig behind the car. I've cleaned the area and I can get it to work occasionally - but as it is now, it's useless. It's on my list to be dealt with when I go in for my oil change in 5k miles, not a show stopper, but an annoyance.

Agreed.

Not the end of world. I did not know of this feature until 1.5 months after purchase, when I came across it in the manual.

I will report back.

Yes, it's part of Comfort Access. The close and lock buttons inside the trunk lid are also indicators of CA. My trunk opens easily with the foot method, and I don't have to be very careful with foot placement. Something is definitely wrong.

The hiphop trunk it is so BMW unworthy, a totally non driving, but shopping, car gimmick.
Come on, go post the defective BMW comfort trunk feature on a Toyota site, give those guys a good laugh.

+1. Works every time. Except, of course, when the car senses that I am carrying bulky and heavy objects in both arms.

Still waiting for a genius to call me back.

Perhaps the sensor is footwear dependent and does not like ferragamo.

Mine sometimes doesn't work. Sometimes it doesn't. it is embarrassing when you are swiping your foot and nothing happens and someone walks by and says "oh that auto open isn't working?". LOL

This is very funny, after the first day I bought the car I was checking out all the features and was hoping for it to have this feature... but it didn't work. So I figured it didn't have it.

Today, I just got the license plate, while putting on the new plate, the trunk pop open... WTH? I thought the key got pushed in my pocket. It got me thinking, so I thought the rear camera act as a sensor and I wave my hand back and forth a few time and it open again... weird sh$ttt..

After reading this thread I went out outside and try to duplicated... but the hand motion to the rear camera doesn't open it any more.... But I tried the foot swipe and it work. But I had to swipe basically at least 3feets across to get it to work. But it does work every time.

Mine doesn't work either. Doesn't affect my life though, so I haven't really tried to get it resolved.

Works every time

Mine works every time. I thought it did not work until I read the manual... kick your foot under and pull it back out quickly. When I tried swiping across under the bumper it did not work but a swift kicking motion in and out does it every time and it is not sensitive to location either. When I took my bumper off to install the hitch I noticed the sensor covers about 3' of the bumper area.

That's BS. If I paid Toyota money for a Bimmer, I wouldn't care that this meaningless feature doesn't work. If I can buy 3.5 Toyotas for what I paid for my car, I want every single thing to work as advertised or better. It's as simple as that.

Exactly what model Toyota are we talking here?!

Readying the manual helped me work the feature better ...

The trick to get it to work is, you put your left foot in, you put your left foot out, you put your left foot in and you shake it all about. All joking aside I just kick right under the license plate and it works every time.

Like what would be broken by shutting the trunk by hand?

I have spent the last 2 days attempting to open the trunk with every foot movement imaginable. I have read the manual.

I got a return call tonight from a BMW "Genius" who wanted me to come in Saturday and she would go through it with me. She said if we could not get it to work properly we could schedule service. I told her I prefer to come in on a weekday and have service scheduled before hand as I do not feel confident she can show me a movement that I have not tried yet. The dealership is 30 miles from my home and I don't want to make 2 trips for the same issue.

One thing she said that made me question her knowledge of this feature is that she said the car has to be unlocked. I questioned that statement, as the manual states the trunk will open whether it was previously locked or unlocked on page 40.

If I were a betting man, I bet that the car will be left for service.

i thought the same thing. just couldn't get the damn trunk to open with any kind of foot wagging. tried at least for a week and it just won't open no matter where is wagged my feet.

the problem was the wagging.

then i saw a youtube video. you basically have to kick (like kicking a soccer ball) and withdraw quickly. if you leave the foot under the trunk too long (i.e. more than .05 sec) it doesn't work. i guess there is some algorithm to differentiate you standing close to the trunk vs a conscious 'kick'. so stand near the middle and kick quickly and withdraw. works everytime. works to both open and close.

That woman is FOS Here's something to try, *disclaimer* I'm no genious. When I changed my rear diffuser as I pulled the old one down it was full of gravel, sand and other excrement, I'm talking a lot. My car was only 2 months old. You can always remove the 3 bottom bolts underneath the car and pop the diffuser out and make sure nothing is in there blocking the antenna.

He's right... I just tried it.... it work best if you stand in the middle and kick in like you would kick a soccer ball with your toe.. try not to break your leg.

But also, it take about 2-3 seconds for mine to response as well. Meaning after you do the kick, it seem like nothing happen, but then 2-3 seconds later it flashes lights then open.

It's a notoriously finicky feature. And even when it "works", the 3 second lag is hard to bear. Earlier versions were much friendlier, but they were also more prone to false positives... causing the trunk to open when you weren't intending. So that got fixed -- resulting in the current situation.

It is so bad now that it has become a perceived quality problem for us when someone installs one of our hitches. Immediately after the installation, they do a test kick and... aha!... the hitch beam must be interfering with the comfort-access antenna. Not true. It's just that the owner never used the feature before so they never developed the precise technique required to reliably activate it. It's gotten so bad that we now instruct owners to test the feature before and after hitch installation in order to ensure that the system works as well after as it did before (it does).

It sounds like the OP may have an actual defect that requires service. At the other end of the spectrum, some people are naturals at activating the trunk pop and cannot understand why others complain about its unreliability. For a lot of folks though, it's just not worth the trouble and embarrassment of doing a jig behind the car. But at least a stray cat doesn't pop the trunk anymore, so I guess there is that...
