CPO warranty extension

HI Guys,

Newbie here, just bought a used 2013 528i xdrive yesterday with just under 13,000 miles. Looking forward to pickup early next week. I've had several Mercedes and this is my first BMW. I've seen the light!

Anyway, this is a certified Elite car with the 5 year/75,000 CPO warranty. I pushed for a longer warranty (I don't need more miles) and was offered a 6 year/100,000 CPO warranty for an additional $1,000. I haven't decided whether it's worth it to spend the extra grand for the additional warranty year. Can you help in my decision?

Your comments are appreciated.

Depending on the in service date, your 2013 should still have 3 more years of original factory warranty. In that case, a five year CPO is really only 2 years. Doesn't the CPO start after the original warranty and is limited to 2 year/50,000 mile after the original for a total of up to 6 years or 100,000 miles? Anyhow, if you plan to keep the car for 6 years, $1000 for an additional year is not a bad price, I would make sure it is a BMW platinum warranty.

That was the old system. In the new one, an Elite CPO is an additional 1 year or 25,000 miles tacked on to the factory warranty. OP is being given the opportunity to effectively double that for an extra $1,000. (add 2 years or 50,000 miles to the original warranty).

OP, a couple of things you should factor in. First, you can buy an extended warranty at any time, right up to the day / mile before your original warranty ends. So you could stick that $1,000 in the bank and wait to see if you really like the car enough to keep it past the 5 years / 75,000 miles from original in service date. While I am sure you will like the 528, you may get the BMW bug and decide in 2 or 3 years that you really want a 535, 550, 435 or M3 instead. If that happens, you pretty much will have wasted that $1,000.

Second, I'd be more inclined to put that same $1,000 toward a really good set of winter tires. The xDrive will get you moving in snow, but the all season tires won't allow you to stop or corner as well as dedicated winter tires. So when that texting 17-year-old girl from Portsmouth Abbey crosses into your lane on 138, you will have a better chance of avoiding her. If you keep the 528 till it has 75,000 miles on the clock, you will go through at least one, probably two sets of tires in that period. Might as well make one of those sets dedicated winter tires, so you are just "that" much safer from Thanksgiving to April.

Third, you will almost certainly get another BMW down the road. While you are thinking about it, join the BMW Car Club (www.bmwcca.org). It's very inexpensive, the magazine is great, and best of all you get a rebate of $500 to $1,500 when you purchase or lease your next BMW. It's a hell of a return on your $48 annual dues.

Thanks for the comment. The service date was January 2013. The standard warranty runs for four years through January 2017 (or 50,000 miles) so I've got about 2-1/2 years of the full warranty remaining. The CPO warranty is for an additional year or 75,000 miles. The $1,000 offer was to provide the 2 year or 100,000 miles CPO in place of the 1 year/75,000 mile. Right now the offer had no qualifier so I assume it was for a Gold CPO package which is the "standard" CPO. The Platinum adds nav and radio coverage. If I decide to go forward, I could ask for the Platinum CPO coverage and see what they say.

Thanks quarkbury. I got a good laugh out of your reference to Portsmouth Abbey, Rt. 138 etc. You're obviously familiar with the local terrain here. Thanks for the advice.

Some Elite CPO certified warranty, it effectively cut the CPO warranty in half. I guess BMW is not making enough money off the CPO. $1000 for one year of gold warranty is about average, I would wait for a better deal.
