Question 2001 750il or 2002 745i???

Given the choice to drive home today, which would you go for?

The '01 750il has more power, but it's an older model,
while the '02 745i has more advanced technology and is a newer car.

looks, of course, are a matter of preference...

To even up the price difference a little, the '01 750il will be a base model
and the '02 745i will be fully loaded.

Some pics below:

2001 750il:

2002 745i:

WOW! Seeing the pictures back-to-back highlight just how big of a styling DISASTER the new E65 7-series is. My god, what a step backwards.

IMO, the E65 is a bit like haute couture. The models strut down the high-fashion runways wearing this stuff, but if any real person went out wearing any of it, they'd look ridiculous.

2002...uggh.

When I saw that rear of the 2002, I thought....Cadillac! I'm with TD, what a disaster.

As much as I agree that the rear end of the 745i looks "intersting" (especially that humpy side view of the trunk lid), I find the 750iL looks dated to me. I wonder if they released the current e65 to release something, since also agree that it is a dated design.

So, given the choice, I went with the new design. I really like the interior as ground breaking.

Too easy... V12, aggressive styling, low and long... 01' 750iL no problem, might even buy a used one in a few years.

750 without a doubt

I'd rather take dated styling to just plain ick. I think the new 745 has some great stuff in it, but it needs a new body. Those headlights are backwards!

when i had my e36 325is and the e46's first came out, I didn't immediately like the way the new 3-series looked. i prefered my e36 and even made fun of the e46's "rounded" features, especially the headlights. i just didn't think that they were as aggressive as the e36's. that is, until i got used to the e46's new styling and saw the cars in person. now, i absolutely love the way my 330ci looks and while the e36 is still one of my all time favorite cars, the looks just don't do it for me anymore.

i'm not saying that i will ever be fond of the new 745i, but it's possible that it may grow on me after I see it in person and on the streets....or maybe it won't, and i'll hate the fact that bmw ever designed such a hideous car, ruining the image of the company...

i'm going to reserve judgement until i sit in one and see it in front of me, but i sure hope it photographs worse than it actually is...

btw, i voted for the '01 750il for the combination of power and classy styling. however, i really like the new 745i's interior and pioneering technology.

Dude, seeing your car in your sig and the fact that you're in the bay area... I think I saw you on 280S the other day... driving rather fast

Anyway, I do agree that I was unsure of the e46 when it debuted as well, but the stylistic differences weren't quite as drastic as this new 7 series. I still hate the new MR2 as well. The old design was way better. The new one is too choppy.

I dunno, that 2001 models' looks are just so slick...the classic drug dealers' car.

Reminds me of that issue of BMW Magazine where they talk about a hot new fashion designer coming out of New York, and they turn one of the New York dealerships into a fashion runway for him...And Bangle was there with the X Coupe and all of his wire-glass pompousness.

Oh well, I'll have a chance to get up and personal with it this weekend in the L.A. autoshow.

750il...very elegant with a hint of its power. The '02 looks too much like a Caddy. It just seems too busy for me.

No question about it ...

E38 with a V-12 any day over Bangle's nightmare E65.

And for $hits and giggles, I would add the light armor option to the 750iL!

Agreed. The 740 sport, with the 18" (are they M parallel?) wheels and blacked out chrome is a slick looking piece. I don't think there's a better looking big car out there. I actually like the incongruity of red on that car. Too bad they never made it with a stick, or with the S62 engine.

Although fugly compared to the 750iL, I'd say go for the 745i.

The 750iL's vs. 745i's technology is like comparing the Flintsontes to the Jetsons.

If comparing the power I don't think it's a valid comparison condsidering the different type of engines they have.

Lightbulb

Interesting question (2002 vs 2001)
My Father had that very issue last summer. His 1994 740iL was getting tired (140k and a parking lot bump in therear door)

I told him of the upcoming changes for the 'new' 7 series. He RAN down to the dealer and bought a 2001 740iL. It wasn't the money. The more I told him about the changes coming for 2002, the more he knew he had to get the 'old' car

Now that he has seen the new one, he just shakes his head and can't believe how BMW lost their way (kind of like Mercedes did in 1992 with the S class if you recall. Actually that's how he came to BMW. He was a Mercedes guy... And may be again )

Either way- I'd not mind either in my driveway (assuming I win the lottery or something...)

Kevin
