335i Engine Overheat went into limp mode

I'd been driving about 20 minutes in traffic and interstate. Car lost all power but was running fine. It sounded like I could hear a cooling fan really rev up. Warning messages started flashing telling me the engine was overheating and to stop the car etc. So I did for a min or two. Cranked back up, still loss of power, then zero power.

Here's the thing, the engine temp needle was around 240 degrees which should NOT be overheated. That's not even halfway.

Heard of this one before? I pray my dealership has a loaner.

thats the engine oil temp.

when the relay for my fan went, my car shut down to protect the engine with the needle in the middle.

my guess would be water pump or a sensor issue.

Same thing happened to me last month on my 07' 335i, car was overheating but oil temp was relatively low BUT my fan was not kicking in at all. It turned out to be the electric water pump.

Sounds like the water pump went out and the coolant temp rose faster than the oil temp or a temp sensor has malfunctioned, causing the ECU to believe the temp is much higher. Be curious to know the cause.

You guys with the 335's have to get the 328i no of these problems. Though not a fast. How fast can you go? I have really never blasted this car yet. I don't need a $500 ticket.

Tell yourself what you like N52 has it's share of "unique" problems all on its own.

You guys really need to get a Honda accord, you won't have any of these problems!

Haley, if reliability were truly the number one priority for most of us on this board, we wouldn't be getting BMW's.

the 328i uses the same type of electric water pump, so you're still in the same boat. plus the n52 has the joys of the aluminum valve cover bolts that like to snap.....

coming from the same person that doesnt change brake fluid untill it looks dirty....

I just had a thermostat replaced. I understand we don't buy BMW's for reliability, but they do need to at least scratch the surface of reliability. I don't expect a Honda, but I also don't expect to be laughed at by my Infinity friends either.

Look at it this way ... they laugh at you 0.1% of the time. 99.9% of the time YOU are grinning like an idiot while driving and laughing at them.

AHA! The admission I've been looking for....the N52 has no water pump!

Being burdened with such a pump, however, after replacement, what OP clearly lacks is JB4 + Meth.

Most know that advanced ignition timing results in a cooler running engine, and that Meth both enables more advance and can cool certain engine parts.

A little slice of heaven....see Terry @ BMS!

SA just called and said its the water pump. CALWATERBOY what do you mean that I clearly lack JB4. Stop telling me that! My wife will have an all out FIT if I try to upgrade to get more power. She doesn't understand.

Well said theKurgan. Let's hope she does not google my username exposing this thread. Did you put your JB4 in yourself? Can I quickly take it out if/when the car goes to the dealership?

We had the Dinan Stage II with their intercooler, local shop did that. I believe, Calwaterboy does his own and it's not difficult.

Yeah Dinan sounds great but I hear its like 2k for about the same improvement as the JB4. The best thing about dinan is the dealership blesses it and it doesnt void warranty I don't believe. Either that or Dinan warranties anything caused by it.

If/when I'm ready for JB4 (or similar mod) I'm going to find someone around Birmingham, AL to help me install it. I want to be able to take it out anytime. And I want to know if this will damage any part of my car. Heck its already in the shop enough for breakage, I don't need to offer up more opportunities to waste more money on it.

Yeah, Dinan matches the warranty. My local dealerships were/are Dinan shops, so it was respected. The intercooler made a nice difference.
