Hard Drive Space Confirmed for Your Music Collection

Someone was asking how much space you get to store your music.

You get 12.5 GB dedicated (I do not if it is a partition or leftover space, please confirm by looking at your system)

To check: go Media -> Music Collection -> Options -> Free Memory

Such a bad translation for Free Memory makes no sense, when I looked at it I though it was a function to Free Memory Space.

Sorry to make your head turn, but forum rotated image 180 degrees.

Post your Free Memory results here.

Also, some notes on managing you music collection.
1. Try to copy all your collection in one time, so it will be in one folder. Every time you copy even from the same disk, system crates another folder like USB1, USB2
2. YOu will not get any album art, so think of this collection nothing but folders with MP3 files, therefore you need to have those named properly so you can recognize the artist and the album.
3. If you copy each artist discography on one disk, just put all album folders/files into the root of the disk and make a copy. Then on iDrive system rename USB1 with the artist name. This way you can have more robust file structure, it will save you extra click.

I think it's a nice feature if you do not want to stream audio or connect your device via cable)

Thanks for the info. I haven't decided how I'll be handling my music once my car arrives.

A quick question though, what happens when you rip the CDs right to the car's hard drive? Does it automatically insert artist/song title data from the CD?

I do not think most CDs have meta data - at least older ones do not.

That's why internet databases like CDDB exist. When you rip CDs on your computer, the SW searches some ID on the disc and matches it with online metadata and then tags the MP3 data.

I will try to rip the disk, but based on what I see it's simple file based system. My guess no meta data will be transferred. I think it will copy mp3 disk, but not rip regular disk.

Yes it does. I tried it with 2 fairly old CDs and it worked perfectly!

On my 2010 535i I could transfer the music from the USB Flash Drive to the Hard Drive. Will I be able to do the same thing on the F30? I haven't seen anything in the manual about it. TIA
cheers

vern you can do the following:
1. Copy music from USB flash drive (connected in glove compartment)
2. Copy from MP3 CD
2. Rip from regular CD (confirmed by sr5959 above)

took a while to get back to you

Also note that You can burn MP3 on to a Data DVD disc and it can browse and play thru the player like CD-R with Mp3s.

hint, you can also play DVD in your car too, (Movie of course) when your car in PARK, of course you can get around it by searching the forums. DVD IN MOTION

The drive total storage is 80GB but they're only allocating 12GB (according to this technical doc) to music for some reason. Wonder what is on the other 68GB.

This makes it all these systems very hackable.

For example, DVD in Motion CD hack is the execution of the script from the CD.

Do you use iTunes for your music, and if so what software do you use to create MP3s from it?

Thanks.

No. I would rather own my music and do with it as I please. I have ripped all of my CD to MP3 format. Any new songs I buy are from places such as Amazon.

iTunes music has been DRM-free since 2009.

If that's the case, it's an easy workaround to buy a USB a stick with more than 12 gigs of memory to store music and keep it engaged. Why not show off that beautiful screen with album art.

I thought you only got album art from an ipod and not just a USB stick.

4-series - do you get album art from USB thumb drive or do you mean ipod on USB?

Assuming only album art from an Apple device, I am guessing that code is more sophisticated and they cheaped out on the capabilities of the base MP3 SW so it does not support album art.

I used the hard drive for music in my 09. I will probably do so again for my 13. I have a couple of questions for anyone who knows:

- Does the system accept anything besides MP3? Will it accept AAC, Apple Lossless or WAV? I doubt it accepts FLAC.
- Does it still sound like -- for lack of a more amusing term -- ass? The hard drive in the 09 was probably the worst sounding of all the conduits I played through the car, including iPod, iPhone and radio. Have they improved the sound off the hard drive at all?

MP3, WMA, AAC, M4A - no FLAC

IIRC, the drive rips CDs to 160kpbs WMA
