Parts for 3.15 diff swap?

I will be doing the 3.15 diff swap in my 2001 540i/6 that has the 2.81 currently.

The 3.15 is out of a 1998 donor 540, automatic.

Which gaskets are needed from the dealer? Specifically, the flanges gaskets?

Also, which star-multipoint tool is required to remove the flange bolts? I want to buy the sockets before this Saturday when I do the job.

Already have a couple quarts of Mobil-1 diff oil (75W-90) to flush and fill new one.

Anything else I need to know before I do it?

Thanks!! Looking forward to more thrust!

you should not need anything other than the diff. when i swapped my 3.15 to a 2.81 all i needed to do was swap out the output flanges. all that is needed for that is a rubber mallet or a long wrench to slip between the flange and the diff and give a firm pull to pop off the output flanges. then swap them to the new Diff in the same manner.

HTH,

is there a gasket required between the output flange and the axle flanges on each side?

i used a synthetic grease. Mobil One. the interface between the output shaft and the half shafts were well coated in grease. i will check my Bentley's in the morning to give you a better idea what kind of grease and where.

There is a gasket in the drive shaft joint at the diff that should be replaced.

well how about that. i did not see that at all on the car. i also tried to find a gasket on realoem, but could not find one. i will look again. it is not that much trouble to swap out the diffs, so i may take a peek at it next weekend when i do a lot of work on the touring.

You want part # 17, it's shown in the wrong location on RealOEM.
One side has a peel off part with stick stuff on it to hold it in place.

yea, i would have never guessed that goes between the diff and the drive shaft. i am still not 100% sure i know where it goes looking at that diagram. i will definitely take a peek at the interface when i am under there next week to make sure that it is still well lubed.
