Error code 2a82 and 2a99
Got the service engine lift and those are the two codes - did some research and it looks like the vanos solenoids need to be cleaned or replaced - anyone else deal with this or have a DIY? I have a 2006 530xi. Thanks
I used to have a whole slew of these SIB's saved but I lost most due to HDD crash but here's the one that applies. Remove the connector(s), remove the bracket anchor bolt and pull straight out. It might be very stiff. Replace the o-rings.

N52 Engine Runs Poorly with Camshaft Sensor and VANOS Faults
E90 (3 Series), E60 (5 Series) with N52 engine produced from 3/2005 through 6/2005
E90, E91 and E92 (3 Series) with N52KP and N54 engines from 7/2006 production
E85 and E84 (Z4) with N52 from 1/2006 production
E83 (X3) with N52 from 9/2006 production
Vehicles equipped with the N52, N52KP and N54 engines may be difficult to start, run rough and have the "Service Engine Soon" light illuminated.
Any of the following camshaft sensor or VANOS faults, as well as various misfire faults, may be stored in DME fault memory.
• 2A9A Cam sensor, inlet signal – signal invalid for synchronization
• 2A98 Crankshaft-inlet camshaft, correlation- Value outside reference range
• 2A82 VANOS intake- stiff, jammed mechanically
• 2A9B Cam sensor, exhaust signal – signal invalid for
• 2A99 Crankshaft- exhaust camshaft, correlation- Value outside reference range
• 2A87 VANOS exhaust- stiff, jammed mechanically
VANOS solenoid valve is jammed or sticking.
On a customer complaint basis only, perform the diagnosis and repair procedure as described below.
E90 (3 Series), E60 (5 Series) with N52 only:
Remove the VANOS solenoid, intake or exhaust depending on the fault codes stored, and using shop air, gently blow out any visible particles and reinstall.
It is no longer necessary to replace the VANOS solenoid on the N52 Engine.
Reprogram the vehicle using CIP17.01 (Target data Status E89x-05-06-510), or higher for the E90 and Target data Status E060-05-06-500, or higher for the E60.
The modified MSV70 DME data contains additional VANOS solenoid activation logic to flush out any foreign particles.
E90, E91 and E92 (3 Series) with N52KP and N54 engine, E83, E85, E86 with N52 engine only:
Swap the faulted VANOS solenoid with the opposing solenoid to verify if the fault follows to opposing location. If the fault follows replace the VANOS solenoid.

Since it got cold I've been having problems with my bmw. It always happens in the morning, start the car and after 30 seconds the SES light comes on and the car/engine shivers/shakes. I had pep boys change the one vanos, had the same problem days later. Now went back just had the second one changed and hopefully it will be fixed. The codes that I got was P1553. Is this code equivalent to the BMW 2a99? It used to say engine malfunction, reduced power until that didn't show anymore and just the service engine light came on and this horrible jerk, the whole car would jerk/shake. I was hoping for the HPFP but r technician said its not. Seemed like the engine was getting enough gas (it was shaking), but I don't know to much about cars...

Hello people, got two problems which I have been told are common on 2005 bmw 6 series (E63).
1. Seat restraint waning and airbag from now where after the car wash people disconnected the socket, I tried clearing from the garage computer. but eventually comes on. : (
2. Vanos intake problem. been told its common too. my 6 has now done 103000 and now all of a sudden making knocking noise and feels like its gonna cut off while driving.
tried asking some of the so called BMW specialists all they talk is £1000s and now it has put me off even touching the car,
any suggestions fellows???
This video should give an idea on vanos replacement. You could just remove and clean them with brake cleaner and compressed air and swap them.
