Mein Auto: 2008 BMW X5 4.8 AWD
VERY LOUD SQEAUL at Idle !!! 4.8 X5

I have a 2008 x5 with the 4.8 and its AWD With 67k miles . It is Making a very loud squeal at Idle . It seems to be coming from underneath the motor . It reminds me of the sound of a bad belt tensioner pulley but the sound is definitely not coming from any of the pulleys . There has been a very light oil leak from the gearbox that the Mechanic noticed when they changed the alternator 2 weeks ago. The sound stopped after they changed the alternator and now has came back. Has anyone had this problem?

I've found that a mechanics' stethoscope is quite useful in localizing such sounds. They're relatively cheap, e.g., $10 or thereabouts at your local Pep Boys, O'Reilly, etc.:

But when using it, be very, very careful not to get it into any moving parts!
