Sound when turning off engine

I have had a sound I can not pinpoint since I bought my 528i last year. My wife's 335 does the same thing. Upon shutting down the engine, there is a brief sound that kind of sounds like auto leveling. I do not have any idea if these cars do this but it just sounds like the car prepares its self somehow for staying put. Any idea what I am hearing?

It's normal for the 5 series. On the 550i the cooling fan even stay on for a brief period.

My E46 made a louder sound than both my E90 and now F10. There are a couple of different noises after shutting down. I believe one is in the engine bay, a pump of some sort that runs for varying amounts of time, longer in hotter temperatures. Actually, I hear my F10 for less time, only a few seconds. If you wait long enough, inside the cabin you might hear a slight motor sound too, I think I remember reading this was part of the climate control, moving back to a neutral position -- either the vent controller or air temp mixer door. BTW, I have never experienced my engine fan running after shutdown on any of my 3 BMW's.
