Front License Plate Mount in Maryland

I just bought a used 2010 M3 from out of state. The PO did not use the front bracket so it's not mounted.

Does anyone in Maryland not use theirs? That is rear plates (tags) only. Ever been pulled over, or worse get a ticket? If so, how big was the ticket?

Second question. If the front mount is deemed the thing to do, how hard is it to mount? Should I take to the Dealer (BMW of Silver Spring is the closest dealer to me), Annapolis would be my second choice.

TIA,

Rob

Just ordered the Skene bracket. Reasonable price, no holes in the face of the bumper. Removable if you winter in a non plate state or something.
NYS will pull you over without it.

yep - I've been driving on this thin ice for the last three months...

When I purchased my M3 last December, I ordered a custom front plate bracket from Passport, painted in Silverstone - infinitely better than the dealer provided stock unit painted black, but not great. I assume I will be stopped, and I keep the front plate conveniently tucked under the front seat and I have rehearsed a plausible excuse at the ready....the inevitable day of reckoning is coming.

I should note in passing that my SA tells me he has never mounted a front tag in the last five years...maybe a braveheart, but definitely lucky.

JeffThunbird/Capobranco,

Do you have a link for your brackets?

Thanx.

No tag for a year now - so far so good. Previous E46 M3 lasted several years before getting tagged at BWI and having to mount it. The day of reckoning is coming, but so far so good.

Spoke to soon - bad karma posting my last post. Got pulled over today by a MD State Trooper - $70 ticket. Guess I will be drilling the bumper this weekend

Thanks for the Skene Designs tip!

After reading about the issue that KSOZE had, I mounted my front plate this evening. I used the Skene Designs bracket. I took my time measuring over and over again and it came out ok.

This last week my wife got pulled over three times in my e46 M3 in Easton Maryland for no front plate. 2 state troopers one local. Got total of 2 tickets. I kid you not. I've been pulled over once in 5 years. I had figured that $70 every 5 years was fine, but good God 3 tickets a week would start to add up...Skene bracket just ordered.

Regards,
Justin Wade

Are you guys saying that the Troopers will pull you over just for that? Im just wondering cuz I have a KY plate on the car but no front plate needed. Im working in MD so I was just wondering if I should expect a blue light special. I live in the back woods and the area has many military folks with many cars from across the country.. I feel ok about the situation but the thought is always there.

Your out of state tag will not be a problem as far as a tag violation candidate. Maryland State Troopers are very aggressive and take no prisoners as far as violations. Their interest in out of state tags is more related to drug traffic up and down the interstates.

I finally relented and had my tag mounted. The way I see it - it is only a matter of time before I'm stopped for either a legitimate cause, or perhaps because the dude is having a bad day....In any case, not having a front tag, invites "piling on". Alternatively, it might be possible to persuade an officer to give me a break, but seeing the missing front tag - two infractions constitute a bridge too far in terms of showing a little leniency. I do not really expect breaks, given the M3 is equivalent to a confessed judgement, but you never know, there have been times in the past when an officer has cut me some slack because he liked my car......

Ive driven without a front tag since my first M3 in 2004 in Maryland. I can tell you that I've gotten pulled over a few times bc of it but only ever near DC. Near Columbia and further out they only say something if they pulled me over for speeding which has only happened 2-3 times. Last time I got pulled over for speeding I got a warning for the speeding and my first ever citation for no front tag(normally its a warning); it was from Montgomery county police, IIRC $70, and not a moving violation so no points.

BTW in order to mount the front tag they drill two holes into your front bumper.

This is a sad, depressing thread.

I want to see how long I can go without it when I get my car redelivered.

They will get you at some point - it is a matter of time. I found myself freaking out like I was driving a stolen car each time I saw a police car. The first $75 ticket had me put it on and don't have to sweat each time I spot a cop (unless I am speeding).

Front License Plate Mount in Maryland

I bought a E46 M about 8 months ago and had it registered in MD. After seeing my coworker get a warning from a trooper for his tinted front plate cover I decided to mount my front plate with a Skenedesign bracket. Not too happy about it but Im not running scared anymore lol. Its not exactly vertical the way I mounted it but I like the look and the point is... Its there.

Probably different for an m3 than a beater but from 06-2011 my beater was suggested once by an off duty cop (at bestbuy he was getting the godfather collection on blu-ray too ) to get it taken care of. I'd risk it and after the first ticket/suggestion deal with it.
