Front page pics today in the statewide paper of weather observers at the summit chipping 2" of ice off the gear. The four day weekend forecast has actually gone from good to better over the past couple days! Looks like Lady Luck is riding shotgun this year. Those who joined us last year will get to see what are called "views" this time.

A new place to eat? I support this endeavor. For the climbers - I highly recommend you wear proper climbing boots. Asolo are my climbing boots of choice!

For those that cannot make it - Sorry we won't see you there. Hopefully you can attend next year.

Proper climbing boots? I thought the climbing involved gears and clutches, not footwear.

They didn't tell you that the final stage of the ascent was on foot?

Bait n switch...
Sides don't high heals count as climbing boots. The heal can dig into the ground

1) Kat is usurping my throne as the person who came from the furthest. She cheated though, she is flying! Can I still retain my title since I came from Israel?
2) I need proper directions (via Google, so i can put it into my phone) from Philadelphia to Mt Washington Omni where I avoid NY city traffic. This has killed me the past couple of years

But Furby, it's not cheating as we are driving a BMW 150 miles (one way) to the airport.

B'sides - when you drive top down, it's like you are flying.

Get to the Garden State Parkway North and take it to the New York Thruway. Thruway east across the Tappen Zee Bridge and then 287 (Cross Westchester Expressway to 684 North. 684 North towards Brewster NY and then East on 84 to Hartford, Ct. Take 91 North at Hartford and stay on it through Massachusetts and into Vermont. This will avoid NYC traffic. Do not cross the Hudson at at the George Washington Bridge and do not take 95 through Ct.

Kat may be coming from further away but I bet she has never driven in 7 states in one afternoon.

1. Pennsylvania
2. New Jersey
3. New York
4. Connecticut
5. Massachusetts
6. Vermont
7. New Hampshire

Aim for the Tappan Zee via I-287, thence the Saw Mill River Parkway (you're welcome ) to I-684 to I-84.

Here's a Google Maps link. Left to its own devices Google would route you from Philly to 287 via US206 through Princeton and Hillsborough--but Google doesn't live here. I included a detour via NJ31 through Pennington to US202. It's a much shorter stretch of two-lane and generally moves along better as well.

If you leave the Philly area near the end of morning rush, about the only place you should encounter any significant congestion is Waterbury CT, which seems to be a choke point whenever the Sun is above the horizon (and a fair chunk of the time it's not). If you are planning to leave before the morning rush in Philly, you will probably be slowed a bit by traffic along parts of US202 and possibly I-287 through Bedminster, Morristown or Parsippany, depending on your timing. It will be nowhere near as bad as passing through NYC--stop-and-go is uncommon, barring incidents (like parking a tractor-trailer shiny side down ).

And most of us have never driven across Texas in one day. Even going across seven states, it is only half the distance going from one side of Texas to the other.

The only difference is the traffic. I think the drive from Philly to Mt Washington takes you by almost half of the population in the US.

And that's just in the toll lanes of the GWB.

In the NorthEast you could drive through 11 states plus the District of Columbia in one 10 hour 525 mile drive from Arlington VA to York, ME, via Philadelphia, PA and Providence, RI. Hard to do 11 states in under 600 miles west of the Mississippi

It's definitely looking like around a 9pm arrival time in Tilton tomorrow night for us, as we have a previous engagement in Gardner, MA earlier in the evening. So if you're staying in Tilton Friday night and it's not past your bedtime, send me a PM and we can try and find a place to grab a drink. The fancy pants up at the Mt. Washington Hotel will be enjoying their cheese platters and $10 martinis, whereas we will have a couple of Slim Jims and a six-pack of Old Milwaukee, but at least we can enjoy the scenery of the moths kamikazing the fluorescent lights under the canopy at the Mobil station.

Furball, you didn't say what time you were leaving Philly. It matters. I've been Zeich's way and I've been CA's route, and others including the bridge at West Point. I'd make a choice depending on time of day. Either route is not the shortest but they sure can be the fastest depending on the traffic.
If I were travelling at 3 a.m. I'd be all over the NJT to the GW to 95 (formerly the CT Tpk). It's an hour shorter than any other route. But at prime time it can be hours longer.
If you're out of Philly in the morning then I like Zeich's route better because it takes more of Jersey into consideration. FYI, 287 thru the Watchungs, thru horse country into north Jersey was once a deserted road to nowhere back in the 60's. It's changed.

The wife decided to tag along. Going to be a great day!
