The guys will tell you a chip or nitrous because you still want to daily this thing. Your powerband will be untouched with these upgrades, which is honestly for the best. ESPECIALLY for your automatic.

The Cams and Heads allow your motor to mechanically flow more air. That's fine except that you'll still be restricted by valves intake and exhaust. To get the full benefit you need to set up the most free flowing combination. If you cant afford to buy a mustang, I wouldn't chase the idea of swapping in a motor with that stuff....way to much money tied into it.

+111 for chip and maf

I own a 1995 540I. The car comes very well made from the factory. You will not improve much in performance unless you are willing to spend $$$$$$$$. I did the common upgrades: New shocks, new cross drilled/slotted rotors and new performance pads, Custom wheels, Jim Conforti ship-+19HP, K+N filter. I keep all belts, hoses, fluids very clean and make sure everything is up to date. The Jim Conforti chip was the best feeling of the upgrades...I was really suprised when I did that. I have not done an exhaust and probably won't. Good luck.

The M60 ecu is too complicated/advanced. A chip is a waste of time, get it remapped. Chips are, in bmw world, only good for M20/M30/M40 engines and earlier efi stuff.

Dinan makes a chip for the 5hp30 automatic transmission. It'll wake the car up in S4 and S3.

What I ended up doing is a K&N filter, Dinan engine chip, magnaflow x-pipe, and valvaline race synthetic oil. Ran very well and the exhaust really made a nice difference.

This is not a Ferrari F1 style transmission. There is NO WAY the auto can change gears more quickly than I can in my manual car. Not only that but the torque convertor is like a power sponge, like having a jelly donut between the engine and the wheels. LOL

If I was going to get only one chip for my 540ia I'd get the Dinan tranny chip.

the auto does shift faster than a manual. you don't slam second slam third on a quiet trip to the shops to pick up some milk do you?

the BMW autos are fine, the main downsides to them are that they are heavier than a manual and also the tourque convertor saps the power if its a high milage unit.

Since mine is a manual, there is no such thing as a quiet trip anywhere in my car. Or it could be because I took the muffler off

If I had resigned myself to an auto trans, I would be driving a W124 V8 Benz
