Got new Scorpions -- good price!
Finally got a new set of tires. My old ones weren't down to the wear bars yet, the front 2 measured 3/32. But last week my BMW dealer sent out a promotional email suggesting replacing tires at 4/32, not the traditional 2/32. They referenced Consumers Reports for this guidance, and yes, Consumers Reports is now promoting replacement at 4/32. This is based on significantly longer wet stopping distances they measured when comparing 2/32 and 4/32. That and a week of rain last week made my decision.
So click here for the good price: Discounttires.com, $169 each for 235/55R17 + shipping (shipping cost me $65.) My tire dealer said this was less than his wholesale! Plus there's a $60 rebate until March 31 (= $15 per tire) so that's $154 per tire before shipping. Way lower than Tire Rack and my local tire dealer. I didn't bother to check prices at my BMW dealer. I know there are a lot of people on this forum who won't buy Scorpions at any price, but if the cost has been your deterrent from buying you have an opportunity right now to replace them at a great price. Why did I stick with Scorpions? First, I like them: handle well on dry and wet (haven't tried snow yet). Second, I do some light offroad use in the desert. Rutted roads, gravel roads, stones. Whenever I tried the Tire Rack tire decision wizard the Scorpions were one of only two in my size that pop up for that type of use, makes the decision easy. Had them installed today, my initial impression is the ride on the new tires is not as harsh as with the old worn ones. Finally, another shout-out to EvlEngr and his Pay it Forward thread. He sent me 2 Scorpions 18 months ago at no cost, so I got a lot of usage out of them before they finally wore down enough to replace.

I've got 87,000 miles on mine and they are just now down to the wear bars. Needless to say I'm sticking with Scorpions.

Thanks for the heads up! Too bad I don't need tires right now....I'm on my second set of Scorpions and still have about a year or so on them. Will def check with Discount Tires when the time comes.

Yes, works well for Canadians.
Note that there are 2 separate websites with different pricing - one for their chain of stores, and one for online sales It's technically free shipping just like for U.S. customers, but you pre-pay tax, duty (if applicable), Provincial tire levy and a fixed customs brokerage fee. Unless you are buying wheels too you have to find a good place for installation and balancing, at a fair price, so see if your local tire dealer wants to try price matching first. |

I called discount and they were not aware of the $60 rebate. Spokelizard can you confirm or explain the $60 rebate please. Thanks

discounttire.com vs. disconttires.com That explains why when my tire dealer tried to double check the online price I told him, he came up with $217 per tire. That s saves a lot of money. |

So which one is the correct one to contact?

That was a typo in spoke's post - no 's' it's discounttire.
You need http://www.discounttiredirect.com as X3-T referenced (for the shipping policy tab). http://www.discounttire.com is for the bricks & mortar stores which is only useful to you if you are planning a 100 mile trip to Ogdensburg or wherever they have their closest store to you. |

discounttire.com is the bricks and mortar store. discountires.com is the internet site I purchased from. I don't know whether it's related to discounttire.com My previous posts all have working links to the Scorpion price and the rebate. X3-terrestrial posted a link to the internet section of discounttire.com. That's not the one I purchased from and doesn't have the good price. I don't know if discounttires.com ships to Canada. You'll have to check the website or call the phone # on the website. |

This site never showed up in my radar when I searched endlessly for the best price last July. Thanks for the info as I will use this when I need my next set!

I found it when Google ads placed it in high position on the right side of my screen. Otherwise I would have overlooked it. |

Wrongway - don't worry about the PSP's I replaced my OEM scorpions with them at 48K miles and am very pleased. At 80K miles on the car now they still look new and give me a much better ride with the same or better performance. However I do not go off road with the X3 (using a Tahoe for that) so I am sure spoke is right that the scorpions are better in the weeds, stumps, boulders and rutted tracks.
You will however, now enjoy a much smoother ride over the potholes with the PSP's.Last edited by UncleJ; 03-24-2012 at 08:04 AM. |

Ha! Thanks, it is strictly freeway driving, on which my old Scorpions were great!
I do have to say though... Drove 90+ last night on the Pilot Sports in the monsoon hitting parts of Pittsburgh... Initially, I'll have to say they are quite confidence inspiring... I do hope they are just as loved as my old Scorpions were. |

Never had anything against the Scorpions.
It was just that the Michelins were just a little easier on the back (softer ride) and the pocketbook.
