N55: Idle Fluctuates Briefly After a Cold Engine Start

Model
E70, E71 with the N55 engine from 4/2010 (SOP) to 10/2011

F07 with the N55 engine from 3/2010 (SOP) to 12/2011

F10, F12, and F13 with the N55 engine from 3/2010 (SOP) to 12/2011

F25 with the N55 engine from 7/2010 (SOP) to 12/2011

Situation
Under certain engine cold starts, the engine idle may fluctuate during the first 10-20 seconds of operation before becoming stable.

No faults will be stored in this situation, which will usually only occur at specific engine temperatures, making it difficult to reproduce in the workshop.

Cause
Unfavorable DME software calibration

Correction
Program the vehicle using the most current version of ISTA/P

Note that the ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

Same as the other SIB post....not available for download right now as it will result in a false "SOS Unavailable" Code.

And again, I could have written the "Situation" Section.

I believe this is SI B12 04 12 if anyone is interetsed.

Got a good shot of it this morning.

That's a pretty benign fluctuation compared to what I've seen on my '12. Sometimes mine will go above 1500 three or four times before it settles out. I keep meaning to grab a video of it, if nothing else just to have it for when I take it in to get the software fix.

Can someone post here when this actually becomes available?

I thought I heard a weird idle the other day during a cold start...hmm

if i have the "ac" on then it will do this..... if I leave ac off like I have for pretty much all winter... this did not happen.

This isn't the worst I've had, I'd say it's about 70% as bad as I've had.

Because it will only bother you for 3 years vs 5-10? We will all get this minor PITA fixed in due time.

I guess so . This is the first car I've leased compared to own.

I leased my first BMW (1987 528e) and bought it off lease. I have only purchased vehicles since. My theory is if I can't pay cash or put up enough to finance, then I probably shouldn't buy the car. But that is just me. I guess I am just old school (and/or just old!).

Here are both the full SIB's. These were emailed to me as HTML and I pasted them to Word and saved to PDF, so the Formating isn't too great, but it's at least the complete bulletin narratives.

That's agains needsdecaf. I thought the delay in engine response when slowing down was just a function of the turbo engine. Now I can both of these issues fixed together.

This is good to know as it confirms you have Integration Level (I-Stage) F001-12-03-511, which is slightly higher than the Integration Level minimum specified in SI B24 02 12, which is F010-12-03-500. Most likely it's ISTA/P 2.46.1 as opposed to ISTA/P 2.46.0.

Which dealership in Houston did the update?

Supposedly ISTA/P 3.00.43 is out now, which is a pretty big jump in the revision level. As hard as it is to get the dealership to perform software updates, I may just sit on this SIB until they are running 3.00.43, and then bring it in for the update.

Not to mention just yesterday I coded a few things on my car (mirror fold and windows / sunroof close from fob and CA; trunk close from inside and fob, window interruption disable, seatbelt alarms disable, & stop button door unlock), so I am not in a hurry to loose that and have to recode it.

You need a working copy of the E-Sys program (220 Mb) with a legitimate Token, the ISTA/P Data Files (10.3 Gb) , and an OBD-Enet Cable. After that, it's pretty simple. I really preferred to have someone do it for me; however, I could not find anyone who could do it remotely, nor anyone who could do it locally, so out of necessity, and with the kind help of some board members, I took it upon myself. Now, I'm glad I did, as I don't have to rely on anyone. If you need more details, just let me know.
