Why does my radio come on immediately and sometimes not?

This is bugging me why this happens and events transpire to make one happen over the other.

Sometimes when I start my car up, the radio comes on immediately at the press of the On button.

Other times, the stereo or iDrive have to run through a some kind of boot sequence but regardless, I get no sound from the radio for maybe 30 seconds.

BMW electronics vary on boot speed. Every one of my last idrive based cars vary on boot. Sometimes it is immediate, other times it takes a long time. My 2007 x5 back up cam was useless most of the time because by the time the camera would turn on, I would be driving forward.

It all depends on how much time your iDrive had to get ready; if you just shut it off, and then restarted, it won't go into sleep mode.

If you quickly unlock the car, in sleep mode, and key it on, you'll be waiting a bit. The key is to hit unlock a good distance (or time) from your car- As soon as the system is disarmed, it will begin waking up iDrive. This extra time means that your iDrive will be closer to ready, when you press start.

Not sure I'm buying the "time to get ready" argument. I've turned my car off to grab a sandwich (< 5 minutes) and the radio will take a while to boot even when I didn't lock the car.

This morning after the car had been off for a good 12 hours and unlocked in my garage I hopped in, hit the ON button and radio was on immediately.

It appears to me to be completely random.

"Time to get ready", as you refer to it, is a fact, not an argument. If you have inconsistent startup times, then you may have a greater underlying issue. The fact of the matter, with pre-LCI iDrive, is that there is a boot up time from sleep mode, triggered by the security system on-off. It sounds like you have a system-read issue somewhere. Does it happen only in certain modes (sat radio, am-fm, cd, etc) or is it totally random?

I'm always in AM/FM mode when the car is turned on and off. I had this same experience with my 2006 330xi. I have friends who experience the same behavior in their BMWs.

I don't personally think there is anything wrong with the car but next time it goes in for service I'll ask them about this and see what they say.

Definitely sounds odd. I see delays when I leave it in Nav / Current Position or Sat Radio, but AM/FM is generally the quickest booter, regardless of sleep mode or not.

I have seen the same behavior as mentioned by the OP on my car, and I have concluded that there is a direct correlation to the time between when I unlock the car and when I start up the engine. If I walk up and touch the door handle, immediately get in and start it, the system takes a while to boot. But, if I unlock it, then wait about a minute or so before opening the door and starting it, it boots up very quickly and the radio (and navigation system, etc.) comes up much more quickly. I've actually changed my routine in the morning. When I walk out of my garage to leave for work, as I walk by the car, I unlock it, then go out to the driveway and pick up the paper. Then, I walk back to the car and get in and start it up. Similarly, if I'm in a parking lot, I use the remote to open the car as I'm walking up, rather than wait to open the car by touching the door handle.

That's generally how it goes for me- I've gotten into the habit of hitting unlock a couple of minutes before I go into the garage in the morning.

your post makes perfect sense...except for this paper you pick up. people throw paper on your property everyday? I'd be mad...keep that paper to themselves.

I have the same issue. No rhyme or reason. I tried to figure it out with how long the car has been in 'sleep mode', etc. No luck. It is not a real issue and I have heard many people having the same problem.... It is just a head scratcher.
