2003 330 engine rattle VANOS? please watch video

Well as the title says here it is guys. My previous knowledge is lifter chatter but I am not an expert on the 30 yet so the help is appreciated.

If I hold me ear to the engine cover it is much louder and is definitely not a fan or belt. gets louder with rpm. can't here it in the car or even with windows down unless I have something like another car or a wall next to me and I am at idle or accelerating in lower rpms

Really hard to tell from the video. What do you mean by 2003 330Ci M? As in, Performance Package or ZHP? That could indicate the ZHP rattle, which should be more evident closer to the VANOS unit at the front of the engine.

If it's across the entire head, I will have to ask what the history of the car is, as you know it. Timely oil changes? Appropriate and quality oil? Lots of revving? Any "money shifts" (accidental 3rd to 2nd shifts under power)? Bouncing off the rev-limiter several times or frequently?

Can you take a longer video that starts from a distance, approaches from the passenger side, and sweeps a bit slower from end to end, then pulls back and comes in from the driver side and does the same?

330Ci M means that it's a 330Ci but I bought it with M fenders and badges. And yes I can take a better vid Tm. after listening to some lifter vids I am almost certain that is it. Car has been cared for pretty well occasional spirited driving and I am not sure it has ever really been revved a lot. I can tell your cooking some though up as to what it is, what are you thinking?

Lifter noise could be be a few things. Forgotten oil changes, crappy oil, abuse of the engine prior to sufficient engine (oil) temp causing wear. Not saying you did this, but a previous owner. Depends on where the noise is coming from: the lifters, which should be a consistent noise across the head (more or less), or towards the front which could be VANOS wear. I'd submit there is a bit of a dieseling sound from the engine, even a healthy one, at idle and while revving. That's why it's hard to tell from a video from a regular camera played from a computer.

Let me step back for a moment and let more knowledgable folks like Smolck chime in. But a slower, more methodical video could help them, also.

True, but she may not have done proper oil changes, in either periodicity or quality. Jiffy Lube is the devil!

Could that result in permanent damage?

Could result in replaceable parts. The cost depends on the damage. Like I said, I hope Smolck and some others will respond with ideas, especially if based on a higher quality vid.

How close are you due for an oil change? And, for the record, I doubt any owner here that cares about their car subscribes to the 15k mile interval indicated by BMW and the computer. 7.5k miles with quality synthetic - especially the approved LL01 oils - are about the max generally accepted. If you are close, you may wish to either do a Seafoam treatment (many threads here and elsewhere on the subject) or simply add some ATF to the crankcase through the oil filler, run for 10-20 min under no or low load, and then change. Refill with good stuff, and reassess. The treatments are good for getting rid of deposits and gunk that can cause noise or flawed oil flow and lubrication.

Last change was 2.5K miles ago, but I don't mind doing it again. I will read up on those treatments.

Vanos rattle doesn't jump out of my speakers as you asked about.
Sounds pretty normal from here.
Take another vid if you like.
Stay away from the treatments. Good high grade hi detergent oil will accomplish all you need. Don't sweat the previous owner too much.

This is normally considered to be in poor taste around here....if it didn`t come with those M badges from the factory, they shouldn`t be the car....it`s not a M-car, so you shouldn`t attempt to front it as one. There is no such thing as a "330Ci M"....
