Window Rattle After Tint?

Has anybody experienced any rattles after having windows tinted? I had my car done a few weeks ago and immediately after I noticed that the car developed a rattle in the driver door and somewhere in the rear, possibly from the brake light.

Tischer took a look the other day and had me drive with both their shop foreman and my friend Ryan, one of their techs. Both confirmed the noise. The foreman said that BMW will often wash their hands in these cases because the vehicle tolerances are so tight that introducing something as thin as window tint can throw them off.

The prescribed repair was somewhat silly. They put a strip of clear tape inside the top of the door jamb. Unfortunately, it has not completely resolved the noise.

Prior to the tint the car was rock solid. At this point I'm weighing options, including removing the tint. Anybody else have suggestions?

Go back to the tint Shop.

I think I may have the same thing on the rear brake light. Can't tell since I have only driven my car three times in the past 2 weeks since the tint and only noticed it on the last drive.

I'm sure they remove the third brake light to tint the rear window.

That sounds strange... I saw the whole process when they tinted my car and never removed the brake light or anything on the doors that could cause any rattle.

He didn't remove my brake light. He just put pressure on it to get it out of the way. That might've caused an issue.

As for the doors, the tint goes nearly all the way up the glass into the seal channel. That is where they suspected the rattle was coming from.

As soon as I mentioned it the foreman asked if it started after I had the windows tinted.

He also didn't remove my brake light, although it doesn't look like he needed to touch it since there was already a gap.

Was you film computer cut or hand cut?

Mine was computer cut.

Computer cut. I've used this same shop and tech for the past 6 cars without issue.

Perhaps the BMW is really that sensitive?

It's not the tint, they have to remove the window shades to tint the rears. That's likely the cause of the rattle. I watched them tint the F10 and if you saw the brute force involved in reinstalling the window shades it would make your sphincter quiver.

good luck. I won't have the dealer or any shop pull the panels apart in my car... tight as a drum. Hope the tint removal works for you.

I was present and watching the entire time. He did not pull the window shades out. I wish it were that simple.

Strange, I am sure those shades need to come out to get access to the rear windows.
Do you have fold down rear seats?

I do. I relatched them. Made sure the headrests were lowered. Repositioned the seatbelt buckles, etc. I'm pretty positive it's the brake light.

Of course none of this explains my door suddenly rattling.

I just need to decide if I can live with it. I don't want the dealer to keep tweaking. In my experience it only makes it worse.

I love the look of the car with tint. I also park outside at home with minimal shade and want the tint to help reduce uv load on the car to protect the interior.

Very strange. I've had 1/2 a dozen different cars tinted at the same place, never an issue. At this point it may be worth taking the third brake light off to see if there is anything loose or cracked in there. The only other suggestion is to have a family member sit back there while yo uare driving around and see if they can pinpoint the exact location of the rattle. Good luck.

Turns out if your tint installer didn't remove the 3rd brake light to tint your rear windshield then the plastic may just stretch just enough to make that rattle.

So off I go to home depot and bought the low density foam tape and added foam trim around the 3rd brake light housing to eliminate any gaps that rattles on the wonderful LA roads.
