CAI Whistle

Just thought I'd post some feedback for the group. I installed a Benfer Performance CAI (awesome!!!) a few months ago along with Agent99. As noted, all CAI's cause a whistle at certain RPMs if you remove the "sound box" from the stock intake. Both of us did this.

A couple days ago I put my "sound box" back on and have noticed a substantial reduction in whistle, but also lost the growl I was enjoying on WOT. I'm thinking I may need to live with the whistle cuz the growl is sorely missed.

ymmv,

Hi Jeff,

In the winter, the squeal ain't bad since the windows are up but come warm weather and open windows....geez, it sounds terrible. I think I could live without the growl for no high-pitch whistle!

BTW, my seat clicking is back. I think I'm going to have to do the bmwtips idea to (hopefully) fix it.

Has anyone experienced this on a 540? My Dinan CAI has no flutes or whistles

my dinan intake has quite the whistle. I happen to like it despite the conflicting view of others.

Yeah, so is mine. I don't think the lubrication they did at last visit did much. I've been thinking of alternatives, another E39 without the clicking comfort or sport seat, but hey, that's an M5 and not within my reach right now. The other option is M5 sport seats. I haven't heard of any clicking issues with them. I have no idea how much the swap would cost though, certainly no less than thousands of bucks.

Frankly, I don't think it's fixable and BMW will not do anything about it. They took the time to write up a TSB about "stacked tolerances" to explain it away rather than modify the design, I'm sure that was the cheapest way to go. Interestingly, I've never had this problem on any other car I've owned, including my 1999 528i with the same exact seats. Sadly, it's this fault alone that is crapping all over my love for the car.

You gonna pull that puppy apart one of these weekends? Let me know and if schedule permits I'll come by and join in the fun with you.

Got any pics of the filter? We think it's the cylindrical shape of the filter that causes this. I suspect the Dinan has a slight conical shape to it.

I don't have pics, but I recently replaced my Dinan filter. The dirty orginal one was a cylindrical shape, but the new updated one was conical. I have the whistle (which I like) and it was the same before and after the filter chagne.

So much for that theory! :-)

Now I'm wondering if the flow characteristics of the filter are contributing. Anyone know if different filters have different flow characteristics? Seems the velocity of the air has a point that causes the whistle, letting off the go pedal a little will stop it, as will pushing down a little more too. For me I believe it's most noticable in the 2000-3000 rpm range, not at the extremes, but somewhere inbetween. Incidentally, with the sound box installed, the whistle is still there, but greatly reduced, and at the same point within the rpm range.

This is not just with CAI's; I bought a replacement K&N panel filter for my Ferrari 328GTS, and it developed a "whistle" noise at higher rpms...I installed a Tubi Style exhaust to drown it out.

They have applications for BMW's, but alas, nothing for the 540...

HAHA, yeah, I use the volume control on my audio system to take care of the whistle and the seat click.
