Here at R&I Motorsports we understand the Vanos Function and Faults in Full Detail. I have Rebuilt all Vanos Units including the Single Vanos, Double Vanos and the S54 Vanos. There are many circumstances where these units can wreak havoc on the car and in extreme instances cause Engine Failure. Some of the Classic Symptons in the Single and Double Vanos is the RPM Cold Start and the Diesel like Rattle. The Symptoms for S54 Vanos or Exhaust Hub Failure would be Camshaft Position Codes like P0011, P0012, P0014, etc. There is also a Marbles in a can sound that is associated with the Exhaust Hub Failure, this one can lodge a broken tab in your engine causing failure and engine replacement or rebuild. There is another issue with the S54 motor where the cam Bolts on the Intake side will back out and cause Engine Failure. BMW updated these bolts to a new design made from harder steel and covered with Loctite to ensure they do not back out. I use Dr Vanos’ Cryo Exhaust Hubs for the S54 and Besians Systems Seals Kits, Rattle Kits and Solenoids.
