DSLR alternative for your ED

Do you want the image quality and customization of a DSLR but don't like lugging around a huge bulky camera/lenses? Do you want a point and shoot that produces superior images?

If you said yes to either then you might consider one of the (relatively) new mirror-less AKA interchangeable-lens camera systems.

Nikkon, Olympus, Pantax, Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung make them.

I just picked up a Sony Alpha NEX-F3.

This particular model has a huge 16 megapixel APS-C sensor, (as good as those found in most sub-$1200 DSLR's)

For those who want the control of a DSLR it has fully manual as well as A-priority, S-priority, and a bunch of other customizable shooting modes, 100-16000 ISO. it can also shoot in RAW format.
For those who want the simplicity of a point and shoot just put it in one of the Auto shooting modes and snap away.

For less than $500 I picked up a kit that included both a 18-55mm and a 16mm wide-angel prime lens. With the prime lens it fits in your pocket. Even with the larger lens it weighs about a pound.
I plan to give it a thorough test on a 2-week trip to Italy in May

Gratz. I like my dSLR to give it up, but there are def times I would like to have a point and shoot (mainly at clubs, lounges, skiing). I will be renting lenses for my camera come ED time.

For those who go this route, or other routes, consider renting lenses instead of buying new ones that you may never (or rarely) use again.
18-55 is a great all purpose lense
Wide angle is great, but mainly for outdoor nature scenes. It doesn't work so well in urban areas as the curvature will make buildings...well curve

I've been using a Nikon V1 with a couple of lenses for the last year and my DSLR's haven't been out of the bag. The 10mm pancake lens is a great low light lens and perfect for ED

I think that you will love the NEX-3F. Last year I got the Sony NEX 7 and 18-55mm lens. I bought the "7" because, at the time, it was the only Sony NEX camera with an EVF. I am very happy with its picture quality. I do find it a bit complex even though I have used film SLRs for a long time. I am bummed that they brought out the NEX 6 with an EVF for significantly less money a few months later and even more bummed that they reduced the NEX 7's price significantly and then brought out the 16-50mm lens which is more compact than the 18-55. But if I had waited I would not have been able to use it on last year's vacation. Such is life. It's like waiting another year for the next and even more perfect BMW.

Give it a thorough test BEFORE the ED. You never really know the quirks until you take lots of shots, then download the images, and maybe photoshop them a bit.

Big memory cards are cheap, get one.

Too, if it does video, test samples at different resolutions. Lower resolutions equal lowermemory card use.

Test it all thoroughly before you go.

Two memory cards. Bonus if you bring a portable laptop to download your pics at night (for backup).

I do this for diving.
One 32gb X class
One 8GB VI class (backup)
One laptop

Each night I backup my 32gb photos to the laptop. If the memory card gets full, or damaged, I switch to the 8gb. Never ran out of space and I shoot in raw

I love my dslr and would not give it up for the ultimate picture quality.... I've been with Cannon for a while now and hav e had everything all the way to my new purchase 2 weeks ago which is the 1Dx - this is used for epic pix....My. Back up camera is a Canon S110 - takes super picks considering the size and great full HD video 2..... If I were to lug lenses around might as well bring my 1Dx otherwise I'll take the S110 | I guess I don't see the point for middle ground.... Maybe that explaines why I never had a 5 series.... 3 series check mark, 7 series check mark... Good luck but Consider an S110 for super light and great pix/video

I think where DSLRs trump everything else is low light photography. P&S can't do it well and these "in-between" cameras are better than P&S but can't quite match the quality of a nice glass and a big sensor. (by big I mean size, not megapixels).

Canon G line has been around forever and those are "pro-sumer" P&S type cameras. Take great pictures but there's a reason why DSLRs are still sold.

The Sony NEX cameras all come with an APS-C sensor which is at least as big as those in most DSLR

Our 2007 ED trip was the last time I used my Nikon FM2 35mm SLR.

I switched to a micro 4/3s mirrorless Panasonic just over a year ago. Smaller, lighter and It takes better looking photos.

I use a couple of my Nikon lenses with an adapter.

Cannon has gotten into the game. It sounds like some of their slr lenses are compatible as well.

I took it to italy in May and Amsterdam in October. Both times it worked great. Perfect combo of performance and small light-weight firm factor.

Personally, I'll never travel with a DSLR again.

Like all things electronics the market moves fast. I haven't kept up with all the new models. Plus each has its strengths and weaknesses. Which you prefer will depend on what you need/like.

Your mileage may vary.

I lugged my Nikon D7000 all over London for a week and sometimes wished for my Canon point and shoot in 2012. Going to ED this Summer and bought my D7000 a companion for the trip. A Cannon S120. So far it takes a very nice picture and is better at video than my DSLR. Bought three 32 GB very fast Scandisk memory cards for the Canon so I can shoot some video and not worry about capacity. Just bringing 18-55 mm and 35mm 1.8 with me for Nikon.
