Rear license plate - how is it attached, small version exists?

How is the tax free German license plate attached? Bracket like in many local cars? Double sided tape to car? Double sided tape to US sized bracket? Small sized plate if the trunk license plate area for US spec cars is small?

They drill two holes and screw it in the rear, not double side tape. It's the case for my Z4 and 535i...

Well they're not drilling NEW holes. Just using the factory designated screw holes in the trunk . The front license plate is installed with double sided tape.
You want to get a german license plate holder (can get it for 1.70 euro from the BMW factory dealership) and install it under the license plate as it
otherwise may rub/scratch your paint

Picked ours up yesterday and the plates are glued on. They said otherwise they would be drilling holes for the German plates.

I picked up a couple of plate brackets from dealers in Germany for free.

I'm completely new to this idea, how is a german license plate holder different? Other than the obvious width/height characteristic? Are you installing the german license plate holder before driving on an ED or when you get your US plates back home?

I did ED with another car company. They had two factory holes in the rear. A black frame was screwed into the two holes and a license plate inserted. In the front, they drilled two holes, screwed in the black license plate frame and inserted the license plate. In the US, they kept on the European plates but gave out two metal license plate backings. I put them in by removing the European frames and reusing the holes to put a metal license plate backing.
