Coolant question

Hello bimmerfest friends, I need some help. My coolant warning light came on the other day(yellow light) and stayed on maybe 2 or 2 minutes. so my manual says " The warning lamp lights up: coolant level is too low; topoff at the next opportunity".

I have an 05 3.0 liter manual X3, 136K. My question is what kind of coolant should I be using or is suggested. I only know of firestone antifreeze(yellow bottle) one. Is this good to use. I was going to just add some. How will I know when I've added enough?

Thank you for any help I can get. Much appreciated.

Jessie

See:

This is one of the better videos on BMW coolant top up.

You may only need a cupful to bring the float up to where it should be.
Don't put any more in than needed to just bring the float up - as in the video.

No harm in just using distilled water for now, until you can confirm that it is not a leak that caused the light to come on.

Don't use Firestone coolant. It's a different type from what is in there (or should be in there).

Hopefully, it's just normal evaporation. But drop by a BMW dealer if the light goes on again.
They may top it off for free, or you can buy a jug of the proper coolant at their parts counter.

Then you can get it checked out wherever you want for a leak and give them the proper stuff to refill it if they do the repair.

At your mileage, if it hasn't already been done, the expansion tank might be leaking, or some other part of the cooling system could be.
